FIRST LEGO League team 13168 project presentation for FLL 2013 Nature's Fury. A weather application that uses image recognition technology to alert users of dangerous weather.
1. Intro
We are the Thunder Struck Cows and our
project is a weather app.
2. Community
The fifth graders at our school went to Cal-Wood, an out door education
field trip, and we were stuck there by a lot of rain with food shelter and no
ideas of how to get out. If we had a way of predicting the long rains we
would have been better off.
6. Cloud Types
• There are 4 main types of clouds
• The cloud types are cirrus, cumulus, stratus,
nimbus
•
The clouds that show worst weather are:
nimbus and the combo clouds such as
cumulonimbus and nimbo stratus
8. G.P.S.
• There are 64 G.P.S. satellites around the world.
• G.P.S. stands for Global Positioning System
• It will not need Wi-Fi to work outdoors, but phones
still need Wi-Fi to preload maps at home.
• If there are at least three satellites in range, it uses the
distance between the satellites and the G.P.S. device to
determine your location.
9. Image Recognition
Here are a few real world examples of how image recognition is used.
•
An image-recognition system developed in Europe, called MOBVIS, can recognize
buildings from photos and pull up information about them.
•
Retailers are prototyping apps that help enhance in-store customer service. It
would enable shoppers to scan an item found in a store, and pull up current
inventory. It could also recommend similar items that are available and have them
ready for the customer at the checkout counter.
•
Current image recognition software can identify a wide variety of objects.
Smartphones have pushed this technology to consumers. For example, logos, cars,
landmarks, and book and album covers can be identified.
10. Our Idea
We think smartphones and image recognition
technology could be used to identify cloud types and
predict the weather.

20. Our Conclusion
If we had the Pocket Weather app at Cal-Wood
we might have escaped before the major rain fall. In the
future this app could be of major use on mobile devices
to predict both severe and minor weather. With it’s high
tech image recognition,GPS data and portable weather
station it could be a useful app for campers, hikers, and
tourists everywhere.
Editor's Notes
Restate problem and how this app solves it… we loved doing this.
