3. The Axolotl was originally native to Xochimilco and Chalco, two
freshwater lakes south of Mexico City until they got drained. Chalco is
now gone, and Xochimilco survives only as a network of canals and
lagoons. These bodies of water are muddy bottomed and rich in plant
and animal life.
4. What do They Eat?
What's their Diet?:
Axolotls can survive up to 15 years on a diet of mollusks, worms, insect
larvae, crustaceans, and some fish.
Axolotls are carnivores.
Water-based live foods can be risky because they can be a source of
disease.
However, if taken from fish-free waters, they tend to be a lot safer .
When feeding an axolotl in captivity, live food such as worms,
grubs and fish fry are excellent.
However, axolotl pellets are also acceptable. Beef heart, brine shrimp
and blood worm can also be used.
5. Size, Weight And
Length
The size of an Axolotls body is around about as big as a tea cup.
They can weigh up to 60 to 227 grams and the length of their body
can grow to 30 centre meters long.
6. Eggs, Live Young And
Number Of Young
A female Axolotl can reach maturity at 12 months/ one year
old, she can lay an excess of 200-600 eggs.
The eggs will hatch in two weeks but the tadpole-like young
will remain attached to the plants for a further two weeks.
At two weeks of age they begin to swim in search of food.
7. Special behaviours or unique anatomical features:
When axolotl's are attacked by predators they can release one of
the appendages to escape. Before long that appendage will grow
back.
They can be boring to watch though as they often don’t move for
several hours at a time. When they do move they are slow.
Feature:
Axolotls are famous for their amazing healing abilities.
They can regenerate almost any injured part of their
body, including the limbs, tail, skin, and even major organs like the
heart, liver and kidney.

9. The axolotl is a very strange and interesting animal.
This animal is known as a 'fish' but is really an
amphibian, an amphibian is a animal capable
of living both on land and in water. It also has some
weird and amazing features, the axolotl can
regenerate body parts and organs.
