The document discusses several conventions of real music magazines that the media producer's work either uses or challenges. Some conventions the work uses include adding footers on the front cover to promote other content, including sections in the contents page, and featuring a large main image on double page spreads. Some conventions the work challenges include not having the title overlap the front cover image as is typical, and placing the title in the top left corner rather than spanning the page. The producer discusses both conforming to and adapting conventions to suit their first issue of a new music magazine.
1. 1. In what ways does your media produce use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media
products?
Many magazines
include
information about
upcoming concerts
and festivals. This
is normally seen on
the page as a cover
line but also can be
in a header and
footer.
Most music magazines use footers on the front
cover of their music magazine. I have added a
footer onto my magazine so that the reader
con know what to expect in the magazine and
it also gives an insight into what other bands
and artists that are not included in the cover
lines will be included in the magazine.
A convention of music magazines is to have the main image overlap
the title. But I decided not to as this is the first issue of my magazine
so the title needs to be clearly showing so that Customers can actually
see and get use to the magazines logo.
Many music
magazines have the
artist in the main
image framed in a
medium shot as the
customer can see their
facial expressions and
also things that they
may be holding such
as a guitar like on my
front cover.
2. 1. In what ways does your media produce use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media
products?
A convention of music magazines to have a bar code on the front cover of the magazine so the
customer can see the price of the magazine straight away and they also can see the date line which
is normally below the bar code. I decided to put the price of the magazine on the front cover as the
customer will want to know how much the magazine is as this the first edition of the magazine so
they will have no clue exactly how much the magazine is.
A convention of music
magazines to have a
different coloured box
behind the text so it
stands out more and so
that the page looks
more attractive to the
customer.
Many music magazines use
a title that spreads all the
way across the page but like
NME I decided to put the
title in the top left corner of
the cover page.
3. 1. In what ways does your media produce use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Many music
magazines have a
sections where
the pages are
sorted into so
people can find
what they want
easily. I have
added this into
my contents page
but have only
added two
sections for the
different types of
articles.
It is a convention
of music
magazines to
include the date
line on the
contents page of
the magazine so
that the reader
knows when this
edition came out
to keep track on
up to date music
news.
Some music magazines advertise concerts and other events on the contents page and give a page number to direct the reader to
the page which contains the rest of the information about the upcoming concerts advertised on it.
4. 1. In what ways does your media produce use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
It is a convention of
music magazines are to
have an editors note
on the contents page
so that the readers can
feel connected with
the producers of the
magazine. I have
included this as
because it is the first
issue of the magazine I
felt the readers needed
to be informed about
what will be included
in future magazines.
It is also a
convention as well
as including the date
of the magazine to
include a issue
number which
allows anyone who
wishes to collect the
magazine know
what issue it is.
Many music magazines have a lot of images dotted around on their contents page so that they have a more bright and interesting contents
page to attract more readers.
5. 1. In what ways does your media produce use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Many music magazines cover up one half of the page
with a big image of the artists or whatever the focus
of the double page spread is. I put an image that filled
up one side of the double page spread so that the
readers will know exactly who the focus of the article
is so that Oblivions fans know exactly which page the
oblivion article contains.
Many music magazines also have
smaller images of the artists etc.
So that the reader gets to see
more of their favourite bands and
artists. I have added in some
smaller images on the left hand
side of the main image and these
images have effects on and show
other images taken in oblivions
photo shoot.
Many music magazine also have picture credit which may
say who took the photo or who the image belongs to and
it will also say what the date was once the image was
taken so that the reader knows when the image was
taken so if they like the image they know who took it and
can look out for their future work.
6. 1. In what ways does your media produce use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of
real media products?
It is a convention of music magazines to
include a quote from the artist that the
double page spread is about. This is so
that the reader can get an insight before
actually reading the article on the double
page spread a small insight into what the
article is exactly going to be about. I have
added a quote from the artist Oblivion so
that the reader can see what he will be
speaking about in the article before even
reading it.
It is also a convention of music
magazines to have a Drop Cap as the first
letter of the double page spread article.
This helps the page to stand out and
catch the readers attention so that the
reader is more likely going to be
attracted to reading the article.
