Visual Design, Propaganda, and Consumer CultureKaren Parker
Discussing the use of visual design in advertising as a means of promoting a consumer culture; looking to Edward Bernays development of psychological advertising techniques
Gensler, a leading design firm globally, spent three years researching and conducting several experiments related to smog and altitude, indoor pollution and living walls, and outdoor green spaces. The study aims to come up with ideas and methods for how architecture and engineering can improve the way we design buildings to address air quality both indoors and outdoors. Fortunately, their results were very insightful. We believe that buildings themselves can become the filters; not just for the users, but also for the whole population.
In this presentation, Kyle presents us the results from three years of research that he and his team conducted to discover how to address air quality both indoors and outdoors through the way we design buildings. Their studies included the efficiency of Living Walls, the effectivity of particulates at various altitudes, and conceptualization of a prototype lung to passively clean air.
Kyle is the Founder and Research Director for Gensler’s “Design for Polluted and Toxic Environments”. His research seeks to use design as a way to problem solve issues related to indoor and outdoor air quality. He has received awards for his work as a designer from AIA, IIDA, US Green Building Council, ID Best of the Year Award, FX International Interior Design Award, Blue Print Design Award, Surface Design Award, and A2asia Award. Additionally, Kyle is a Lecturer at Tongji University’s Design Innovation School & FabO Maker Space, and recently joined forces with the Climate Reality Project, led by former US Vice President Al Gore as a “Global Climate Leader” and Mentor.

Why Effective Waste Disposal is Important.pdfIsabella Barry
Some factors, including the protection of the environment, public health, economic viability, and societal well-being, call for effective garbage disposal. The amount and variety of trash produced are rising at a pace that is unprecedented as urbanization and the world population continue to rise.
This PDF document provides a detailed account of the origin and historical applications of activated carbon. It highlights that activated carbon, as a traditional and modern man-made material, has witnessed continuous expansion in its application fields and increasing usage since its invention. The document examines historical records of charcoal applications and provides insights into the invention process and industrial production of activated carbon. Furthermore, it broadly divides the history of activated carbon application into three stages and identifies two significant events as milestones in its application history. The first event is the use of activated carbon in gas masks during World War I, marking the initial stage of activated carbon's application history. The second event is the successful application of activated carbon in odor removal, which led to its widespread use in water treatment, gas purification, and other areas. The document also delves into the application history of Chinese activated carbon brands, dividing it into three stages. Overall, this document offers valuable insights into the origin and historical applications of activated carbon, serving as a crucial reference for understanding its development and usage.
GLIMPSES OF GREEN CONSUMERISM AND STEPS TOWARDS SUSTAINABILITY IAEME Publication
The Green Consumerism has emerged world over and slowly changed the ways
business used to be practiced. Studies indicate that after 1960s followed by few severe
industrial accidents gave rise to Green Movement and at the same time opened vistas
for research in green business. Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring was one of the
pioneering work influenced green movement. Infact, that was the first time pesticides
usage and its associated health hazards on human life were studied carefully. One of
the landmark work was named “Limits to Growth Report” submitted to the Club of
Rome. It projected a catastrophic future if growth continued at the same rate and
therefore many groups called for “zero growth”. In same time period, IBM had
become one of the first companies to establish a formal corporate Environmental
Policy and the year 1974 witnessed the Control of Pollution act in the UK, followed by
the publication in the UK of the “Green Consumer Guide” in 1988. Literature on
Marketing reveals that the concept of green marketing got attention in the 1970s.
During mid-1970s, some significant contributions were made on ecological
perspectives of marketing.
Global environmental problems have surfaced in recent years in the midst of a general upgrading of economic standards in advanced countries. This has been paralleled by rapid growth of poverty, population, and urbanization in less developed countries, and resulted in broadening mutually dependent international relationships. International efforts concerning environmental conservation relate to global warming, protection of the ozone layer, acid deposition, forests, wildlife, marine environment, desertification, and pollution problems in developing countries.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
3. Among the sectors of the chemical industry stands out:
*petrochemical industry *soda industry
*sulfuric acid industry *fertilizers industry
*plastics industry *cosmetic industry
*pharmaceutical industry
*rubber industry
4. Chemical industry
Tablets as a form of food supplement is obtained by compressing
a mixture of active ingredients with excipients.
5. Detergents
Detergents are cleaning products ,
widely used both in households and
industry . We divide them into soaps
and synthetic detergents which do not
contain soap.
6. Detergent soap
The first known and used detergent soap was
invented in the Middle East more than 5,000 years
ago . At the beginning it was used mainly for
washing clothes, and washing of wounds. It was
only in the 11th century N.E. They began to use
soap to wash themselves .
7. Fritz Gunther
Although the production of soap has a long history , is
the first synthetic detergent appeared only in 1916 ,
created by the German chemist Fritz Gunther .
Since that time, they created a wide variety of synthetic
detergents with different properties , adapted to clean
various items.
8. Where are chemical sites located - and why?
The sitting of many of the world’s major
chemical companies may seem random or
puzzling. In fact there are very good reasons
for the choice of sites, reasons which also
reflect the industrial and consumer
landscape of the day.
The main centers in Poland for the
chemical industry are Szczecin,
Suwalki, Warsaw , etc.
9. Environmental regulations
There are serious concerns about the potential impact of certain manufactured
chemicals on living organisms, including ourselves, and on the natural
environment. These concerns include air, land and sea pollution, global warming
and climate change, ozone depletion of the upper atmosphere and acid rain.
The chemical industry has a world-wide initiative entitled Responsible Care. It
began in Canada in 1984 and is practiced now in over 60 countries.
10. Society of Chemical Industry
The Society of Chemical Industry (SCI) is a learned
society set up in 1881 "to further the application of
chemistry and related sciences for the public benefit".
Its purpose is "Promoting the commercial application
of science for the benefit of society" and provides an
international forum where science meets business on
independent, impartial ground. Since being founded
in 1881, the society has expanded and diversified to
cover a range of interest areas, such as food and
agriculture, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology,
environmental science and safety.
