Category : Japanese Collectables >> Netsuke
On a trip in Australia, I came across two charming septuagenarian
ladies, offering silver table-ware, silver jewellery and two not-so-old
Netsuke of dubious origin and age. Amidst all, I spotted a small
green box with a lid that no longer closes properly. Carefully, I
placed it in the palm of my hand and upon opening the lid, found a
complete traveler's writing set. The box covered in green shagreen,
was lined with red satin. What had taken me aback was the small
size of the writing set, but more so, that it was well used and yet in
its complete, original state.
The small writing set is feminine by all means. I envisioned a young
lady leaving England from one of the ports in the South, heading
out on a long journey, not without fraught, to a new world, a new
continent, called Australia. I imagine her being very young and
having to travel with her family, leaving a heart-broken love

This Netsuke found me. Indeed, I did not set out to search for a
skull. But somehow, he made his way to me, escaping from
oblivion, on a half forgotten, but promisingly messy shelf.
Memento mori were as popular in Japan as they were in Europe
and nowadays there is a revival in these artifacts; skull motifs in
particular.
The Netsuke is fashioned from a considerable chunk of ivory,
grinning and grimly revealing his teeth. His eye-sockets are so
large and deep, that for some reason, I am reminded of Star Wars.
From his jaw, a snake winds out with tail still writhing around inside
the large skull. The snake’s head is upside down, looking upwards,
forked tongue spitting out. The skill is not quite realistic, it seems
more of a mask and one needs to enjoy a gothic fascination as its
owner. However, right on the back of the skull, below the snake’s

interesting first editions and an eclectic mixture of arts, crafts and
unique collectable items. The Collection includes the works of
inspiring Western and Eastern artists and craftsmen.
Please delve into the pages and see if a Netsuke reveals its story

reveals an insight into times gone by. In addition to those items
featured for sale, I will undertake private searches for particular
items such as Samurai Swords

21. Born in Switzerland in 1963, Daniel has lived in Tokyo for many
years. He is a successful entrepreneur and writer, descended from
a family of blacksmiths, perhaps a reason why he enjoys running a
business as much as he loves craftsmanship. In his view, today's
artists are the intellectual descendants of the artisans and master
craftsman of old; when all they produced, however well rendered or
beautiful, had first and foremost to be functional and of a superior
quality. Daniel is striving to reintroduce functionality as a key
attribute of art.
Daniel is a versatile writer, his books range from interesting folkloric
tales to a post Tsunami analysis. His writing is greatly influenced by
his need to both observe and to capture his observations on paper,
as much as his drive to create a story or a new life. He loves the
endless iterative process, the genesis of words that are powerful,

Daniel has a great respect for artists, particularly their dedication to
create something that outlasts. In this collection, Daniel has
included the work of present day artists and craftsmen and women
who focus on their art and craft more than themselves; people who,
through their dedication, have woven their passion into the fabric of
their art and craft. Each is a personal friend, because of who they
are, because of what and why they craft and because of their vision
and passion.
This never abating interest in functional quality, in collectibles small
and large, inexpensive and dear, provides access to a world without
horizons. This holds true for my passion for unique collectables
from a bygone age: Netsuke that reveal a story, swords that conjure
images of ancient warriors and prints that give an insight into times
gone by.
