5G for Internet of Things & Patents
5G (the fifth generation mobile communications) is scheduled to launch in around early 2020s. Even if it is not
determined yet regarding the standard technology details, many researchers expect that 5G will transfer 1000 times
more data, and thus, can connect billions of IoT (Internet of Things) devices at the same time. Key candidate
technologies that enable 5G to support IoT devices connection are millimeter wave communication, massive
MIMO (multiple input and multiple output) technology, cloud RAN/network function virtualization (NFV)/
software defined network (SDN), ultra dense network (UDN) and low latency network. Following patents illustrate
some examples of the current key technology developments of 5G for the IoT.
Millimeter Wave Communication
Because millimeter wave frequencies over 24 up to 90 GHz can provide greater bandwidth, 5G will probably be
using millimeter wave frequencies. By exploiting millimeter wave frequencies, 5G may provide data throughputs
of more than10 Gbit/sec.

Abstract: A receiver in a communication system is provided that includes a synchronization module and a channel
estimator. The synchronization module is configured to identify an end of a cyclic prefix (CP) in a received signal
using slope detection by monitoring a detection metric threshold in the received signal. The channel estimator is
configured to estimate a complex noise variance using guard band subcarriers.

Massive MIMO technology
Massive MIMO technology can address the ultra high capacity requirement demanded by 5G exploiting many
antennas both in the transmitter and the receiver. 5G massive MIMO base stations may contain hundreds of
antennas to form a beam to focus an intensified signal to a user cell phone.

Abstract: Systems and methods for configuring base stations in a geographic region to handle specific respective
types of data traffics are provided. The configuration of the base stations can be static, semi-static, or dynamic.
User devices are associated with base stations based on their data traffic requirements. By configuring each base
station for a particular traffic type, each base station can handle its corresponding traffic with lower complexity and
using fewer resources.

Cloud RAN/NFV/ SDN
Cloud RAN is the application of network function virtualization (NFV) to the radio access network (RAN). Cloud
RAN virtualizes base station processing leveraging cloud-based computing infrastructure to implement the RAN
functionality (SDN).

Abstract: An architecture for transporting radio samples, compressed samples or pre-processed radio samples in
symbol form across a communication network, including a packet switched network such as Ethernet. Further, the
conversion of the radio samples from streaming data to a packetized format can also be performed. Processing of
radio samples can be performed in a centralized location, where the centralized location can service multiple radio
heads that are located across a large geographical area. This centralized processing can be referred to as Cloud-
RAN. The radio heads can also perform pre-processing to reduce effective data rates across the communication
network. Further, one or more of the components of the communication network can perform timing
synchronization utilizing, for example, Synchronous Ethernet (SyncE) and/or IEEE 1588.

Ultra Dense Network
UDN can improve spectral efficiency by reducing the distance among communication devices, and thus, can help
to achieve ultra high capacity required for 5G.

Abstract: Certain aspects provide a method for wireless communications by a first access point, comprising
determining a first schedule of intervals for the first access point to communicate with a first group of one or more
wireless devices, wherein intervals of the first schedule are synchronized with wake up or transmission cycles of
the first group of one or more wireless devices and communicating with the first group of one or more wireless
devices according to the first schedule.

Low Latency Network
A low latency network minimizes the data transmission time between any two points on that network. 5G
performance targets 1 millisecond-latency with which can support the applications of self-driving cars.

Abstract: A communication system includes an OFDMA transmitter (Tx) at an optical line terminal (OLT)
generating an OFDMA signal by assigning orthogonal subcarriers to different cell sites through digital logic, an
electrical multiplexer combining the electrical OFDMA signal with two electrical clock signals, and an optical
intensity modulator intensity-modulating the resulting joint electrical OFDMA+clocks signal; an optical
multiplexer receiving aggregate OFDMA signals on multiple wavelengths with tight DWDM .lamda.-spacing; a
remote node (RN) receiving the OFDMA signals, such that each wavelength is distributed by a de-multiplexer
(Demux) to designated general small cell area, to which cell sites are connected by optical splitters; and an optical
network unit (ONU) to directly photodetect and digitize received OFDMA signal, wherein downstream (DS)
information for each cell is digitally extracted and prepared for wireless radio frequency (RF) transmission over an
air interface, and an electrical splitter and bandpass filters to separate the OFDMA and clock signals for DSP-free
clock recovery.

Even if it is not determined yet regarding the standard technology details, many researchers expect that 5G will transfer 1000 times more data, and thus, can connect billions of IoT (Internet of Things) devices at the same time. Key candidate technologies that enable 5G to support IoT devices connection are millimeter wave communication, massive MIMO (multiple input and multiple output) technology, cloud RAN/network function virtualization (NFV)/ software defined network (SDN), ultra dense network (UDN) and low latency network. Following patents illustrate some examples of the current key technology developments of 5G for the IoT. Millimeter Wave Communication Because millimeter wave frequencies over 24 up to 90 GHz can provide greater bandwidth, 5G will probably be using millimeter wave frequencies. By exploiting millimeter wave frequencies, 5G may provide data throughputs of more than10 Gbit/sec. The synchronization module is configured to identify an end of a cyclic prefix (CP) in a received signal using slope detection by monitoring a detection metric threshold in the received signal. By configuring each base station for a particular traffic type, each base station can handle its corresponding traffic with lower complexity and using fewer resources.

Further, the conversion of the radio samples from streaming data to a packetized format can also be performed. Processing of radio samples can be performed in a centralized location, where the centralized location can service multiple radio heads that are located across a large geographical area. This centralized processing can be referred to as Cloud- RAN. The radio heads can also perform pre-processing to reduce effective data rates across the communication network. Further, one or more of the components of the communication network can perform timing synchronization utilizing, for example, Synchronous Ethernet (SyncE) and/or IEEE 1588.

US20150092759 (Low-Latency Synchronous Clock Distribution and Recovery for High-Speed OFMDA-Based Mobile Backhaul; NEC) Abstract: A communication system includes an OFDMA transmitter (Tx) at an optical line terminal (OLT) generating an OFDMA signal by assigning orthogonal subcarriers to different cell sites through digital logic, an electrical multiplexer combining the electrical OFDMA signal with two electrical clock signals, and an optical intensity modulator intensity-modulating the resulting joint electrical OFDMA+clocks signal; an optical multiplexer receiving aggregate OFDMA signals on multiple wavelengths with tight DWDM .lamda.-spacing; a remote node (RN) receiving the OFDMA signals, such that each wavelength is distributed by a de-multiplexer (Demux) to designated general small cell area, to which cell sites are connected by optical splitters; and an optical network unit (ONU) to directly photodetect and digitize received OFDMA signal, wherein downstream (DS) information for each cell is digitally extracted and prepared for wireless radio frequency (RF) transmission over an air interface, and an electrical splitter and bandpass filters to separate the OFDMA and clock signals for DSP-free clock recovery.
