April 16 LEADING THE WAY SAFELY
USE OF CHEMICALS + HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES
The Coshh regulations (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) were
introduced to ensure workers are given suitable information relating to any
substance they may have to use which could be hazardous to their health.
The regulations place a duty on all companies to carry out an assessment
of ALL the substances they have to use.
Those which are identified as having the potential for causing harm in their normal use has to
have an assessment carried out - a Coshh assessment.
This document must identify some basic information / facts which you the users must be
aware of, so that you and the company can take the correct precautions to keep you safe.
How many of you have ever taken the time to ask for or read the Coshh
assessments for the substances you come into contact with during your
working day?
If you don't read the Coshh assessment, how can you know how the
substance can harm you and what you need to do to protect yourself?
The Coshh assessment will detail how and why the substance is hazardous, what control
measures need to be in place, the required levels of PPE needed and any additional controls
such as first aid requirements, personal hygiene and disposal of after use etc.
Make sure you have read the Coshh assessment and adhere to all the control measures, even
the most hazardous and toxic materials can be safely handled without adverse effect if you
abide by the control measures in the Coshh assessment.
Remember
Only use a substance if you know what it is, have seen and read the
Coshh assessment and understand the control measures.
Wear the correct PPE and ensure you know the location of the nearest eyewash station.
DON’T TAKE A CHANCE EVEN FOR VERY SMALL/QUICK JOBS!
