1. A New Project What to expect, how to contact me, and how we’ll learn
2. Unit Overview Our upcoming project is called “The Importance of Numbers” and will take approximately 1 week to complete. Students will work individually and in groups to complete a project about fractions. The standard we will be completing is from the Alabama Learning Exchange website and states that Kindergarten students should be able to recognize that a whole object can be divided into parts. Objectives include: -Working in groups -Dividing sections of a whole into parts -Present projects and learning outcomes to class
3. Unit Overview (cont.) The unit on the importance of numbers will consist of implementing fractions in a real life situation of making a new attraction for a community. Students will be assigned a group and a section of the attraction. The group will talk about their section of the attraction and individually draw their representation of the park and their sections. Students will then present their drawings and what they learned. Benefits of this unit: Learn the meaning of parts of numbers Learn to work in groups Learn to present ideas to a group Learn how to break apart a whole and recognize parts
4. Questions students will answer throughout project Essential Question (broad question with many answers) How do numbers apply to us? Unit Questions (focused questions with various answers) How do we choose which portion of our attraction is biggest? What are some ways we can split a whole into equal parts How can we show that we can have more than one whole in a project? Content Questions (focused questions with one answer) How do we measure if the parts of our attraction are equal? How many parts do we have to work with in our attraction? How big is our whole?
5. Role of students & parents Students will be responsible for creating their own version of an attraction. In this, they will work as a group to plan a section then will draw their own version and share it with the class. Students will also write a short report on what they learned about fractions and parts of a whole. Parents will be asked to encourage their children as they work on this project. Also, having parents visit the classroom and see what students are working on helps parents to be connected and also allows students to showcase their work. Volunteers can always be used.
6. Role of teacher The teacher will be available for any and all assistance needed by students, although they are encouraged to work through their issues with each other if possible. The teacher will help facilitate learning and will work with students on their projects. The teacher will also assess the students during and after the project is completed. Parents are encouraged to contact the teacher with any issues.
7. Project Based Learning Project based learning allows students to: Build 21st century skills Learn real world skills Work individually and in groups Make decisions and build decision making and social skills
