Everyday students are throwing away items that should be reused. Yet in the science classes they are told that climate change is becoming a serious problem and something must be done. Why is the district contradicting themselves?
Today the primary way people dispose of their trash is by throwing it into the garbage. That is billions of pounds of trash being thrown into giant piles of trash known as land fills. This is not only an eye sore but it is also contributing to the global warming issue which is threatening our plant.
In 1963, former Senator Gaylord Nelson began to worry about our planet. In 1969, Senator Nelson had an idea. He decided to have a special day to teach everyone about the things that needed changing in our environment. On April 22, 1970, the first Earth Day was held.
In 1987, the Philadelphia City Council passed City Ordinance No. 1251 A, setting up the first large-scale urban mandatory recycling program in the country. This began the recycling program that the city uses today
The city has improved its recycling program by expanding the materials to include plastic items and to have weekly pick ups. The city now allows the citizens to use any hard sided bin instead of the need to get the blue recycling buckets.
