more than 2 year except in case of Masters where higher gap can
be accepted based on experience.
6. Entry Requirements
Overseas students wishing to study in Ireland have two options:
a) Attend secondary school in Ireland and complete the Leaving Certificate
Examination with Irish students. This route is chosen by a number of
students who commonly take the examination in conjunction with English
language tuition.
b) Undertake recognized public examinations in their own countries. This is a
more common route and it is essential that every applicant check that the
educational qualifications she/he is presenting are adequate to satisfy
entry requirements. To have a realistic prospect these results should be
very good, e.g. for medicine 3 good 'A' Level passes (grades A/B) or the
equivalent, in relevant subjects are required. The minimum requirement for
most degree level programmes is 3 grade 'C's at A level or equivalent. If
there is any doubt about the acceptability of an applicant's qualifications,
clarification should be sought in good time from the particular third level
institution..
c) Student can apply to the institutions directly or to the Central Applications
Office for Undergraduate Programmes.

11. Non-EU student
If you are a non-EU student
If you are not from a country in the EEA or Swiss, you are known as a non-EU student. You must
obtain a study visa before you come to study in Ireland or the UK (which includes Northern Ireland).
While you are at college in Ireland you are entitled to work up to 20 hours per week in term time, and
40 hours per week in holiday times. If you are at a UK university (this includes Northern Ireland) you
can work up to ten hours per week in term time or full time during holidays.
12. Can I work while I am studying in Ireland?
It is permissible for Degree Programme students to engage in casual employment
where they are
• Registered with Stamp 2 permission,
• Enrolled on a course listed on the Internationalisation Register,
• Attending a full time course of education at or above NFQ Level 7,
• Undertaking a full time course for a minimum of 25 weeks per annum,
• On a course of at least one year’s duration,
• Pursuing a course leading to a qualifications recognised by the Minister for
Education and Skills.
Casual employment is defined as up to a maximum of 20 hours part-time work per
week during the academic semester, or full time work (up to 40 hours per week)
during normal college holiday periods.

Ireland is a highly developed democracy with a modern economy. The Irish
economy is particularly strong in the areas of software development,
pharmaceuticals, manufacturing and international services.
Dublin, Ireland is Google's European Headquarters and its largest operation outside
the US, with employees from over 40 nationalities.
Ireland has an export based economy. Main industries in Ireland are Software,
Mining, Construction, Telecom, Tourism and hospitality. Ireland has also
established itself in areas of life sciences including Biotech & pharmaceuticals
Industries. It has 32 Manufacturing plants – approved by USA Food & Drug
Administration producing 6 of 10 world's best selling drugs.
14. Stay and work
You may be able to stay and work in Ireland after you graduate, but there are some
restrictions. If you are a non EU graduate, you can apply for an extension to your
study visa for up to six months (up to 12 months in the UK) after you get your exam
results, so you can get work experience. In the Republic of Ireland you must apply to
the Garda National Immigration Bureau for this.
After this, you will only be able to get employment in specific areas where there are
skills shortages. These include information technology, healthcare and financial
services. To stay in Ireland long term, you will need to get a ‘Green Card’.
These are issued on two conditions:
if the job pays over €60,000 a year
if the job is in a restricted list of occupations, pays over €30,000 a year and is for
at least two years.
Another way of obtaining employment is through the work permit system, but these
are difficult to obtain.
The equivalent to a 'Green Card' in the UK is the Tier 1 (Post-study work) category,
which allows international graduates to stay to look for work.

European Social Fund grant is available to registered students attending approved Higher
Certificate Level 6 or Ordinary Degree Level 7 programmes and who fulfill the eligibility
requirements, including a means test. E.S.F. Grants are awarded by the Vocational
Education Committee (VEC) and are paid by the Institute.
VEC Scholarships and Higher Education Grants are available to students attending Honours
Degree level 8 programmes. They are subject to the same means test as the E.S.F. grants.
Scholarships/Higher Education Grants are paid by the VECs/Local Authorities by cheque in
three equal installments – before Christmas, after Christmas and after Easter.
The Institute must certify that the student’s attendance and progress is satisfactory. Cheques
received by the Institute are normally routed to the student via the Administrative Office in
their School.
