If We Could, We Would

The ostrich is known for putting her head in the
sand. When she does, she cannot see what is
around her. She gives the appearance of wanting
to escape the troubles of the world.
“Ignorance is bliss”, or is it?
With all the bad news that is being delivered to
our senses on a high speed conveyor belt by the
media, the ostrich offers a viable solution!
It would be easier to bury our heads in the sand
and make the world go away. Or like the lyric to
the song “Stop the world and let me off.” We
cannot do that. We are in this world.
The world news has been dark and scary lately:
Riots in Missouri; not knowing how his story
would end, a laughable comedian ended his
story; Christians in Iraq and Syria being herded
like pigs, or worse, slaughtered like them; the rise
to power of another evil empire [ISIS]; the
merciless murder of an innocent man on the world
stage [Journalist, James Foley]; an outbreak of a
deadly virus, Ebola.
There is more, and there always will be more,
until the Savior returns.
We can rejoice that we are still shocked by things
in the news. “When will it get better?” or “When
will the suffering end?” many ask.
Suffering is everywhere and is occurring in the
lives of everyone you know and see. Recall that
Latin word, “Tentatio”, and its German
counterpart, “Anfechtung”. Those words describe
sorrow and suffering, hardship, trials and
temptations. They call for endurance, calm, a
fortress-like faith, perseverance and spiritual
armor.
But can’t we just be like the Ostrich? Not for very
long. We are in this world. But we are not of this
world. We are passing through, we are foreigners,
pilgrims. The old timers would advise us to see
our homes as motels and inns, and our
belongings as loans from above to both enjoy
and, in the end, willingly give back.
Did you ever consider praying for the end of the
world? That is spoken of in the last book of the
Bible. Here St. John is speaking about that, “He
which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come
quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus”. -
Revelation 22:20. And we pray for His coming
when we pray the Lord’s Prayer, “Thy Kingdom
come<”
While we are here, we shine His light through us,
to the world around us< Matthew 5:14-15: "You
are the light of the world. A city set on a hill
cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp

and put it under a basket, but on the lamp stand,
and it gives light to all who are in the house.<”
Once when at a business something humorous
came up with an employee there. I said, “We
might as well have a
good time while we
are down here!” By
“down here”, I
meant on earth. The
other fellow was not
on my frequency
and replied, “Are you from the U.P.?”
We are down here to be points of Light. We live
for Him, looking forward to the world which is to
come, all the while shining His Light where we live
and work, to our loved ones and neighbors.
Who in your story needs encouragement? Who in
your story is lonely? Who in your story could use
a meal? Who in your story could use a box of
food or some assistance with new clothes.
By the way, do ostriches actually bury their heads
in the sand? We interviewed one and she told
us< “We ostriches don't bury our heads in the
sand—we wouldn't be able to breathe! But we do
dig holes in the dirt to use as nests for our eggs.
Several times a day, we put our heads in the hole
and turn our eggs. So it looks like we are burying
our heads in the sand!”

What is a hearing loop? How does it work?
Hearing Loops allow people who wear hearing aids to directly receive the sound
from the church’s PA system in their own hearing aids, without having to pick up a
separate listening device, by switching to a T-coil or telecoil program.
Digital hearing aids have significantly improved in the last decade, but they
do not restore hearing to normal. Difficulties often remain when in challenging
listening situations. Hearing loops help hearing aid users overcome this problem by
broadcasting sound, without background noise or reverberation, directly into the hearing aid. In
order to hear in the loop, a user has to activate this program by pushing on a button on the
instrument or a remote control.
Hearing loops have been in widespread use in public venues and churches in England and
the Scandinavian countries for some time, and are now starting to catch on in the United States.

How do I know if I have T-coils in my hearing aids?
If you wear hearing aids, you will need to find out if you have this wireless telecoil or T-coil receiver
in your hearing aids (most do, although that feature is not always turned on.) The telecoil program
is sometimes called the telephone program. If there is a push button on your instrument, it is likely
the telecoil program is an option but it may not have been activated by your audiologist.

SCHEDULED LEARNING RETURNS
The Fall Rally kicks off our school year. With that, students in grades 4K thru grade 8 return for
scheduled Sunday school and Confirmation classes.
Children who are 4 years old thru 6th grade can register to attend Sunday school. Forms can be
found in the tall brochure holder in the office hallway near the Evangelism bulletin board. Please
turn in completed forms to the church office to at the Sunday school table during the Fall Rally on
September 14. We have exciting new things in store for you; please encourage your child to join us!
Students entering 7th grade can begin Confirmation instruction. If your child is entering the 7th
grade this year and DID NOT RECEIVE a packet of information to register for class, please contact
the office as soon as possible.
Returning 8th graders will finish their Confirmation instruction this year and be confirmed in the
Lutheran faith on Sunday, May 3rd. Information packets were mailed in late July. Please notify the
office if you did not receive this information.
IMPACT is new this year. Parents are welcome to join the 7th and 8th grade Confirmation students
on the first Wednesday of each month from 7-8pm (October 1 will be the first IMPACT night). For
more information, contact Pastor Greg.
All completed registration forms should be returned to the office or Fall Rally table by Sept. 14.
We continue our adult Bible studies on Sundays at 7:45, 9:15 and 10:30am as well as our Bible
study groups on Tuesdays at 7am and 9am. Please join us at any of these classes that work in your
work and family schedule. No registration is needed for these adult classes.

This year’s Fall Rally will be held in the gym on
Sunday, September 14. There will be NO
10:45am service that day. This event begins
after the 7:45am service and will run until
approximately 12:30pm.
Various boards, committees and groups will
provide information on how you can volunteer
to use your time and talents to serve God’s
people. Take this opportunity to find out what
your brothers and sisters are doing to help
those less fortunate, how you can add your
talent to a ministry that spreads the Gospel, and
in what direction the Lord may be leading you!
There will also be an opportunity to ‘Meet the
Author’ and have your copy of ‘Lydia Believes’
personally signed for you.

Confirmation classes begin on Wednesday,
September 17 at 6pm; Sunday school begins on
September 21 and will be held during the
9:15am service.
The Fall Rally also includes…what else? A
potluck lunch, of course! Bring a dish to pass
and enjoy the fellowship of other members of
Our Saviour.
Veeeetttteeeerrrraaaannnn’’’’ssss HHHHoooommmmeeee VVVViiiissssiiiitttt
Thank you to Thrivent Financial, Y100 and our
congregation. The August 4 bus trip to the
Veteran’s Home in King, WI was sponsored by
Thrivent Financial and included a delicious
lunch for the visitors. We, along with other
Lutheran congregations and veterans groups,
collected donations. Bear and Charli from Y100
organized a 2-hour drop off for their listeners
to contribute, which resulted in a van load of
donations and monetary gifts.
The shelves at King were EMPTY when we
arrived and the staff and volunteers who
received our gifts thanked us with smiles and
hugs. We were assured that our donations
were very welcome and would most assuredly
be enjoyed by the residents.
The volunteers enjoyed an informative history
of the facility as well as tours. A huge storm
caused a power outage so the volunteers were
not able to play Bingo or serve ice cream at the
Coast Guard Anniversary party, but we did visit
with the veterans as we toured and shopped in
the gift shop. After a bus ride through the
cemetery, we left for home knowing we had
made a difference that day.

5. ACTIVITY ABOUNDS AT OUR SAVIOUR
Wow, when Summer ends, you can see the building at 120 S. Henry Street come alive on more than
just Sunday mornings!
Classes for Green Bay Trinity Lutheran School began in late August with 87 students in
grades K-8. About 24 part-time and full-time 3- and 4-year-olds will fill the preschool room
beginning in the first week in September. Seventh and eighth grade Confirmation
students will arrive for evening classes on September 17. Sunday school classrooms
will bustle with our children ready to learn about Jesus when classes resume on
September 21.
So, with all of these activities for our children, what are the adults to do? Well, let me tell you…
there’s plenty!
Choir practice starts up again on September 7. Sessions begin at 7pm. Just come to the Sanctuary
and be ready to sing to the Lord.
The Fish Fry returns September 12 and will repeat on the 2nd Friday of each
month throughout the school year. Volunteers are needed on the Thursday
preceding the Friday for prep as well as the Friday night for cooking, prepping and
serving. Contact Tim Richter (trichter@nacr.com) to find out about this great
fellowship opportunity. Volunteers can include those in 6th grade and up. Workers
receive discounted food; youth receive a portion of the tips received for their OSLC youth account.
What else happens in Fall? The Packer season begins, of course! Our Saviour sells food and
beverages at a concession stand in the Club seat section of Lambeau Field for all home games.
Workers (20-25) are needed for every game. Jobs include set up, front counter, runner, food prep
and clean up. You are welcome to work just one game or as many as fit into your schedule. All
volunteers must participate in online training and testing. Packets of information on how to complete
these requirements are on the Welcome Center. Testing must be completed at least 72
hours prior to working an event so please plan accordingly. Contact the church office

With the new Confirmation schedule comes IMPACT, a new program for youth and their parents held
on the first Wednesday of the month from 7-8pm. More information is available from Pastor Greg.
Chicks with Stix usually meet the 2nd Monday of the month. There are many projects to work on
including pillowcase dresses, wheelchair bags, prayer shawls, Haiti dolls, winter accessories (hats,
mittens, scarves) and more. Sewing, knitting and crocheting are the means to complete these
projects. Lessons are available so even the new learner is welcome. Start with the meeting on
September 8 at 1pm or contact Caroline Arndt at 469-3140.
Last but not least, the many boards and committees at Our Saviour would welcome you into their
missions. Find out so much more about the opportunities listed above and many others by attending
the Fall Rally on September 14. Whatever interests or skills you have, there is something available for
anyone willing to serve.

6. Green Bay Lutheran School Association Update
The Green Bay Lutheran School Association (or GBLSA) is a name you may have heard mentioned
many times at church, especially in the last month. As a result perhaps you may be asking “Who is
the Green Bay Lutheran School Association?”
The Green Bay Lutheran School Association is a group of LCMS congregations in the greater Green
Bay area. The congregations in the Association are Christ of the Bay, Faith, Hope, Our Saviour, and
Redeemer. GBLSA maintains a 501(c)(3) status, is a Recognized Service Organization of the LCMS,
and is legally incorporated under Chapter 181 of the Wisconsin Statutes. The purpose of the
Association, per the Articles of Incorporation, “is to own, control, operate, manage, and maintain one
or more Lutheran Elementary and Middle School as conditions warrant or demand, in Brown County,
Wisconsin or any county immediately adjacent thereto.” Currently GBLSA operates one K–8
elementary school, Green Bay Trinity Lutheran, located on the campus of Our Saviour on Green Bay’s
east side.
So you may be asking “Why operate a Lutheran School?”
There are a number of reasons for operating a Lutheran school. As pointed out on the Lutheran
School Portal (www.luthed.org), one of those reasons is:
To Demonstrate the High Value the Congregation Places on Children
Operating a Lutheran school requires “a considerable investment of prayers, energy, money and
staff.” This commitment by members of the congregations of the GBLSA shows the greater Green Bay
community that we place a high value on “God’s beloved little ones.”
Perhaps you are asking “How can I help support GBLSA and Green Bay Trinity?” In addition to
prayer, two ways that you can provide support are by volunteering and contributing financially.
Volunteers are valued for the difference they make in the lives of our students! There are many
opportunities available to provide your time and talents in a variety of activities benefitting both the
GBLSA and OUR school, Green Bay Trinity. These opportunities include: recess monitors, hot lunch
helpers, classroom helpers, and helping at Eagle athletic events. In addition, volunteers are needed to
make events such as Donuts for Dads, Muffins for Moms, the Taste of Trinity in February and a new
event this year - Summer’s Last Blast picnic on September 20 - fun and successful. If you are willing

Providing a high quality educational experience for students at Green Bay Trinity and continuing to
implement the ministry plan of the GBLSA of serving those in the greater Green Bay area that need
to hear the wonderful news of Christ-crucified requires a considerable financial investment. The
current funding model for the GBLSA is divided into three areas: student tuition payments,
Association church tuition payments and fundraising. Key fundraisers that take place each year are
Annual Appeal, Taste of Trinity and another new event this year - Date Night on the River being held
on September 13. The Board of Directors is continually reviewing ways to expand our fundraising

Another question you may be asking is “How is each congregation represented in the
Association?” Each congregation in the Association is offered representation on a Board of Directors.
The number of representatives from each congregation has traditionally been based on a
proportionate percentage of students enrolled at Green Bay Trinity from each congregation. The
congregations choose their representatives each according to their individual congregation policy.
Each member of the Board of Directors serves for a term of three years and/or until their successor
has been appointed. A member may be elected to two terms consecutively, at the annual meeting. At
the annual meeting, the Board elects four officers: President, Vice-President, Treasurer and Secretary.
And you may be asking “Who is currently on the Board of Directors?” Current members are:

LITERACY GREEN BAY LLLIIITTTEEERRRAAACCCYYY GGGRRREEEEEENNN BBBAAAYYY SSSSEEEEEEEEKKKKSSSS VVVVOOOOLLLLUUUUNNNNTTTTEEEEEEEERRRRSSSS
Literacy Green Bay is a not-for-profit organization that provides free literacy services to adults with
limited basic reading skills and/or limited oral English skills. We recruit and train volunteers to become
tutors to work one-on-one with adults seeking help in reading, writing and oral English skills. A large
number of people seek our help to learn English as a Second Language and assist with reaching a specific
goal (such as studying for citizenship, looking for employment, or working toward a GED).
We need volunteers who are compassionate, patient, enthusiastic about reading, and who want to make a
difference in someone’s life. Literacy Green Bay provides training workshops for volunteers to become
certified ProLiteracy tutors. Attend a one-hour orientation to find out more about tutoring and to register
for a training workshop. The orientation meeting on September 17 (10am or 6:30pm) will be held at the
Literacy Green Bay office at 424 S. Monroe Ave. See the office bulletin board for more details.

WORKBEE WEEKEND (October 17-19) – Volunteers have always played a major
role in keeping Camp Luther clean, beautiful, and in good condition. Today,
Camp Luther continues to be blessed by hundreds of individuals who faithfully
participate in Workbee Weekends. Individuals or entire families can help get
Camp Luther ready for fall and winter fun by participating in various work projects. The weekend is
FREE and camp provides all meals, and time for fellowship and devotions. Something for everyone.
COUPLES RETREAT (Sept. 19-21) – From newlyweds to empty-nesters, this is a retreat for married
couples of all ages. You will find time to spend as a couple as well as fellowship with other Christian
couples. Housing is in our cottages. A guest speaker will lead "couple" oriented Bible study/learning
sessions. You’ll have time to enjoy camp and local activities AND a special candlelight dinner.
LIVE, LAUGH & LOVE LADIES RETREAT (Oct. 3-5) – Just for the ladies, this weekend is all about
relaxing and refueling with God's Word. Leave the pressures of work, home, and life behind and join
others for a refreshing and renewing weekend. The schedule is designed to draw you closer to God
and to each other through a variety of individual, large group and small group activities, including
Bible study, devotions, "Cranberry Fest" in Eagle River, special craft activity, "Ladies night out," as
well as other camp favorites like walking, biking, and canoeing in the beautiful fall weather.
COTTAGE RETREATS – Enjoy a cottage retreat at Camp Luther this fall. Our cottages have
everything you will need for a relaxing getaway in the midst of God's beautiful creation. When you
