2. WHAT IS THE HIPPOCAMPUS?
The hippocampus is located in the
medial temporal lobe
Hippocampus is the Latin word for
seahorse, because the hippocampus
has a seahorse shape
The hippocampus forms part of the
limbic system, which is the part of the
brain that deals with emotions
The hippocampus is mainly associated
with memory, especially “the transfer of
information from short-term to long-term
memory”
3. WHERE IS THE HIPPOCAMPUS?
The hippocampus can be found in
the temporal lobe
The green portion of the picture on
the left is the temporal lobe
The temporal lobe is an inside fold
and would need x-ray vision to see
it

4. HIPPOCAMPUS WITHIN THE LIMBIC
SYSTEM
The limbic system is associated with
emotions, especially with “the emotional
component of behavior, memory, and
motivation”
The hippocampus is a main organ in the
limbic system
The hippocampus in the limbic system is
known for “transferring information into
memory”

5. THE HIPPOCAMPUS AND MEMORY
“The link between the hippocampus
and long-term memory formation
was first described by William
Scoville and Brenda Milner”
Hippocampus stores the data for
long-term memory
Hippocampus is involved with
declarative memory
Brenda Milner and William Scoville
6. THE HIPPOCAMPUS AND MEMORY
Many people in the beginning of research for epilepsy have
found out information about the hippocampus
Individuals underwent surgery on the hippocampus to relieve his
seizures, after the surgery the individual could no longer form new
memories but could remember his childhood
Individuals who have damaged or lost parts of the limbic system
but have their hippocampus intact, only have long-term memory
without the ability to read, for new memories, or learn new
functions
7. THE HIPPOCAMPUS AND ALZHEIMER’S
The hippocampus is necessary in
order to form new memories
Alzheimer’s disease is usually
connected to the loss of memory
and cognitive skills
Alzheimer's disease affects the
hippocampus severely and then
goes on to affect other parts
Memory Is usually the first symptom
of Alzheimer’s disease due to its
impact on the hippocampus
8. HIPPOCAMPUS AND BEHAVIOR
The research being done on
hippocampal damage has shown
correlation with behavior
Hippocampal damage to animals have
cause hyperactivity
Hippocampal damage to animal has
also “affected the ability to inhibit
responses that have previously been
learnt”
9. THE HIPPOCAMPUS AND MENTAL
ILLNESS
The hippocampus is “involved in
severe mental illnesses”
The hippocampus appears to shrink
in patients with schizophrenia and
severe depression
The frontal lobe appears to also
shrink along with the hippocampus
Research is being done to unshrink
the hippocampus for patients with
mental illness MRI scan of people with and without depression
