This document provides information about the mobile-friendly features of the Collaborative Learning Annotation System (CLAS). Key points include:
- CLAS now has a shorter, mobile-friendly URL structure of clas.arts.ubc.ca/name
- The interface, course welcome page, and login pages are optimized for mobile usage
- Users can easily record, upload, view, annotate and comment on videos from their mobile devices
- Recording directly through CLAS is limited to 10 minutes on iOS devices but longer videos can be uploaded from the device camera roll
- The system is supported on Safari, Chrome and IE across iPhone, iPad, Android and Windows tablets and phones.

2. SHORTER URL’S
SERVICE CATALOG PAGE: https://clas.arts.ubc.ca
Most CLAS instances can be reached by: clas.arts.ubc.ca/name, such as
clas.arts.ubc.ca/ed (or educ), clas.arts.ubc.ca/prod, etc.
Any combination of this URL, with or without the http or https, will work when
entering into a browser window. They will all point to the *secure* (https)
website.
⇒ Easier to enter URL on mobile. Full URL will show up in the mobile history
instead of being cut of f.
Note: all the old links with applications.arts.ubc.ca still work normally.

7. SUPPORTED MOBILE PLATFORMS
¡ Safari on iPhones & iPads
¡ Chrome on Android
¡ IE & Chrome on Windows Phones & Tablets
¡ Chrome on Blackberry.
¡ Not supported:
§ Firefox on Mobile does not have the full responsive interface, and
some pages will display the normal, desktop interface.
§ Chrome on iOS works fine for all purposes except recording, as it has
stability issues when uploading large files
8. CAVEATS
¡ Artificial limits not related to storage capacity may be placed
on certain types of mobile phones for web browser based
recording
§ E.g. most i0S phones can only record exactly 10 minutes of video at a
time on Safari. The solution to this is to use the native camera app to
record first, then use choose “upload existing file” on the one-click
record page in CLAS.
§ There seems to be no limit on Android, so it’s possible to directly
record hour-long videos from CLAS on an Android tablet.
¡ The dialog that say “take video or choose existing” that
appears when you tap the record button is device specific, and
may say something else depend on which phone / tablet you
are using. The text above is from iPhone / iPads.
