Challenges in Data Analytics: Different application scenarios need different storage solutions: HBASE is ideal for point query scenarios but unsuitable for multi-dimensional queries. MPP is suitable for data warehouse scenarios but engine and data are coupled together which hampers scalability. As part of its machine learning benchmarking efforts, MLCommons (mlcommons.org) has built an 86,000 hour open supervised speech recognition dataset with a commercial-use license known as The People’s Speech, incorporating subtitled videos and audio in the public domain scraped from the Internet. Creating a speech recognition dataset requires running inference on a pre-trained neural network speech recognition model to “force align” audio against a transcript (in this case, subtitles). In order to improve upon an initial CPU-based pipeline that took approximately 3,500 CPU days to one that takes 24 hours end-to-end, we created a hybrid data pipeline that used Apache Spark for general data processing and Google Cloud Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) for running the neural network speech recognition model. I will describe in-the-weeds learnings on how to (1) use a non-GPU accelerator with Spark for inference, (2) share physical memory fairly between the pyspark UDF worker.py process and JVM process in the same executor, and (3) implement efficient joins of data that has been reordered relative to its source dataframe by batching by sequence length (tf.data.experimental.bucket_by_sequence_length). If you do offline inference on sequence data with deep learning models, this session is for you. Our entire pipeline is open source under an Apache 2 license at https://github.com/mlcommons/peoples-speech.

SafeGraph is a data company — just a data company — that aims to be the source of truth for data on physical places. We are focused on creating high-precision geospatial data sets specifically about places where people spend time and money. We have business listings, building footprint data, and foot traffic insights for over 7 million across multiple countries and regions. In this talk, we will inspect the challenges with geospatial processing, running at a large scale. We will look at open-source frameworks like Apache Sedona (incubating) and its key improvements over conventional technology, including spatial indexing and partitioning. We will explore spatial data structure, data format, and open-source indexing like H3. We will illustrate how all of these fit together in a cloud-first architecture running on Databricks, Delta, MLFlow, and AWS. We will explore examples of geospatial analysis with complex geometries and practical use cases of spatial queries. Lastly, we will discuss how this is augmented by Machine Learning modeling, Human-in-the-loop (HITL) annotation, and quality validation.

According to data compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2016, an average of ~100 people were killed in automobile accidents every day in the United States. Agero, a market leader in software-enabled driver assistance services, has responded to this growing problem with a breakthrough consumer app that provides near real-time driver behavior analysis and actionable insights to its users on how to become safer drivers. As part of this effort, we have developed a methodology to identify the most frequent routes that each driver travels by applying Dynamic Time Warping time-series analysis techniques to spatial data. In this talk, we will give a high-level overview of the methodology, and discuss the performance improvement achieved by transitioning the software from stand-alone Python into PySpark + Databricks. Discussion points will include how to determine the best way to (re)design Python functions to run in Spark, the development and use of user-defined functions in PySpark, how to integrate Spark data frames and functions into Python code, and how to use PySpark to perform ETL from AWS on very large datasets.

As Uber continues to grow, our big data systems need to grow in scalability, reliability, and performance, to help Uber make business decisions, give user recommendations, and analyze experiments across all data sources. Since 2016, we put Presto in production. Now Presto is serving ~100K queries per day @ Uber, and it becomes a key component for interactive SQL queries on big data. In this presentation, we would like to talk about our experiences and engineering efforts, we start with general introduction about Hadoop Infrastructure & Analytics @ Uber, then comes a brief introduction to Presto, the Interactive SQL engine for big data. We will focus on how we build the New Parquet Reader for Presto, and the detail techniques, Columnar Reads, Lazy Reads, Nested Column Pruning. We will show performance improvements and Uber's Use Cases. Finally, we would like to share our ongoing plan and future work for Big Data Analytics @ Uber.

The publication contains the results of 33 interviews with people who, in 2022, have jobs relevant to soils. This report provides a snapshot of the data collected by TERN in the Pilbara, Western Australia. Also included in this report is how to access the data, descriptions of data types, panorama photos and examples of research using TERN data. Plots on the Pilbara were first surveyed by TERN from April 2015 to August 2016. The surveys collected vegetation and soil, data and samples following the AusPlots Rangelands methodology, with 37 plots completed. Some of the plots were revisted in 2021. An updated version of this report will be provided as this data becomes available.
