Software is being developed since decades without taking sustainability into consideration. This holds for its energy efficiency, that is the amount of energy software consumes while ensuring other system qualities like security, performance, reliability, etc. etc. Software un-sustainability, however, is becoming increasingly evident with the growing interest worldwide. Finally IT specialists are becoming aware that software solutions can, and should, be designed with sustainability concerns in mind. In doing so, they can create solutions that are technically more stable (hence requiring less modifications over time), target societal goals with a higher certainty, or help sustaining the business goals of both developing and consuming organizations. Everything sounds great. The real question is: how? How can we redirect software engineering practices toward sustainable software solutions? And how can we turn sustainability into a business so that companies will finally invest in it? This talk explores results and challenges in engineering software with a sustainability intent.

During the last few years, there has already been a solid discussion and political will, transversal to most European countries, on the need to invest in prevention, promoting healthier living environments and person-centred digital solutions. In short, it seems that consensus on the need to move forward and invest in wellbeing and quality of life was achieved. During the COVID-19 pandemic and the confinement measures it implied, many services had to be closed; teleworking suddenly became the rule and many families stayed at their homes, with the children in remote classes, some without sufficient equipment or the most adequate digital tools available. Digital services, if implemented correctly, can be the right tools to address many of these challenges. The importance of implementing them correctly increases in the current context of accelerated Digital Transformation, where many are looking towards Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a means to help people to cope with the increasing number of digitized work. We are assisting to a gear-shift in the current digital revolution, as now we better understand how it could have been helpful, if already embedded in daily life. COVID-19 generated severe consequences for the working context, with effects on physical and mental health and wellbeing, and with trends such as teleworking coming to stay. Organizations and individuals working on AI can play a great role in providing solutions, not only during this emergency period, but also in the long-term perspective, and not only for office workers but in more traditional industries as well. Thus, the COVID-19 pandemic is a driver for the digital revolution in the workplace across many levels. However, inequalities persist and their impact on universal access to the digital world is enormous. Moreover, several other challenges come from the use of artificial intelligence in the workplace. This paper addresses how technology applied to the work environment can be leveraged to respond to the emerging challenges raised by COVID-19. It also provides reflections on the main opportunities and challenges that the use of AI solutions in the workplace imply, suggesting measures or recommendations to tackle them, towards a concerted approach to AI, integrating the policy agenda with the implementation strategy.

As the benefits of UX become recognised and user-centred design processes are applied more often, project teams start using terms such as ‘user needs’ and ‘user requirements’ in their project meetings. This is great news. Addressing user needs and user requirements in a structured manner can provide great clarity for your solution design and actually spark the creative thinking that leads to innovation. But what exactly are user needs and user requirements and what’s the best way to apply them in solution design? Several questions arise once you commit to designing for user needs and user requirements: Are user needs and user requirements actually the same thing? How can we ensure they are accurate and evidence-based, not just a projection of the designer’s vision? Is documenting them worth the effort or just an administrative burden since the team intuitively knows what they are? Even worse - could they actually become constraints that inhibit us from thinking of innovative solutions? To tell us how the process of designing with user requirements works we have a guest presenter who is a recognised expert in user requirements engineering - Thomas Geis, President of the International UX Qualification Board. He will discuss user requirements, how they are elicited, documented and then applied to a structured user-centred design process. He will outline the difference between user needs and user requirements and how to apply them effectively to ensure your solution stays true to the needs of your users.

Interactive systems are increasingly interconnected across different devices and platforms. The challenge for interaction designers is to meet the requirements of consistency and continuity across these platforms to ensure the inter-usability of the system. This presentation describes the current challenges the designers are facing in the emerging fields of interactive systems. Through semi-structured interviews of 17 professionals working on interaction design in different domains we probed into the current methodologies and the practical challenges in their daily tasks. The identified challenges include but are not limited to: the inefficiency of using low-fi prototypes in a lab environment to test inter-usability and the challenges of “seeing the big picture” when designing a part of an interconnected system.

Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
