1. Whether national language should be taught as a mother tongue?
Have you ever heard the little boy who lives in your area, particularly in the area
of West Java using the Indonesian national language everyday in their communication? Or
adolescent who is proud of his use of national language, but a little - bit Indonesia combine
with the local language? These view as it seems to have been happening behind the
familiar. Most of parents feel proud to see young children can speak the national and
sometimes they are reluctant to teach the local language to their children. If it takes place
on a continuous, would local language be lost? Should parents teach the national language
without teaching early regional language to their children?. In this essay I will show the
impact that will occur when parents, especially with background Sundanese people who
didn’t teach the local language to their children. The first is the loss of a sense of regional
languages , reduce the child's ability to use more than one language and use of language
Sundanese wrong or not according to the rules.
The first impact did not introduce the local language to children is the loss of a
sense of belonging in the local language of the child himself. As we know, a lot of people,
especially in urban areas Sunda reluctant to use the local language to get along with their
peers. They are more like " ber aku-kamu " which they think that looks cool . 8 of 10 of my
friends who I asked about it said that they were ashamed of using Sundanese language in
interaction. They had already been taught in the Indonesian language and rarely are taught
using Sundanese language . It certainly makes one question comes to our mind, if we are
not proud of and would like to own culture , how other people will like it ? .
The second impact is we may reduce the child's ability to use more than one
language. There is a theory which states that a child can learn two or three languages at the
same time as they only learn one language. Instead, parents can use to teach their children
to use the local language while they can give some words using the national language
2. thereafter. It can be built in the ability to use two languages at once. Upon entering the
base at school age, 7-13 years old children will be challenged to learn a foreign
language,here our children will be a multilingual person that master more than two
languages . With only teach the national language, of course, the child will not be
interested even be unable to use its own local language and it is indeed very regrettable.
Final impact is the emergence of mixing Sundanese language and the national
language among young people around us. we may often hear words like "abi mah da ga
mau di gituin kaya kamu" or “ aku gero-gero kamunya gak nempo”. That seemed they
cannot use both languages either local or national language correctly.
There is one Theory, the Imitation theory that said - Children hear speech around
them and copy it. When a child is raised in a English speaking environment they aquire
english. Although, mistakes such as over-generalization "goed" and "bes" are predictable
and consistent. Its means if the children in Sundanese hearing Sundanese language and
the national language which is not true then it is not likely they will do. They will say
"sudah Dahar?" that we know the correct phrase is "tos dahar / neda?". In other words, as it
would be nice if parents teach children traditional language first and do not directly
introduce a national language as a mother tongue. It is because the children will imitate
whatever they see around them, if we can integrate the teaching of the national language
and the region as well the effects that I have described will not happen.
