Essay 'a fresh endevour'
1. Response Essay: A
Fresh Endeavour
Have you ever heard someone say "I will love you until I die”?. These words may sound very over but in
the poem "a fresh endeavor", the authors show the figure of the man who loved his wife until he died.
There is some poetry in which the author tells about his own life or the lives of others. Some poems can
also be categorized as fiction and non-fiction poetry. In this essay I will examine the poem "a fresh
endeavor" in terms of content, figure of speech that is in use and form.
Content of poetry "a fresh endeavor" tells the story of someone who had died, and he told how his wife is
left behind by his feel very sad. in the first stanza there is the phrase "So now I've taken leave of life" I
interpret it that this poem will tell the story of a deceased person and this person will tell his own story.
We can say that the writer puts himself as a ghost who is still with his wife who is still alive. “Grasp a
thought in verse inside your head you pray, Bemused of mind, Softly mournful, Understanding intertwined
with tears”, In this sentence we see that his wife is still alive pray for her husband and be sad the death of
her husband. I really like this poem because the author showing her husband who still loves his wife even
until he became a ghost. At the end of the poem that in second stanza we saw a sentence a” fresh
endeavor - we're forever One together, resting yonder, Cross our open planes of blue”, this sentence
shows that in later life when his wife is dead, they will live together in the hereafter. So it is clear that the
content of this poem displays a true love story that brought a person until he died.
There are two figurative languages that used in this poem. The first is metaphor and the second is idiom.
The figurative language metaphor is used at first stanza (silent-beauty). The word silent is usually
indicated with sound but in this poem the author in pair silent with word beauty. The other phrase that
uses the metaphor figurative language is (drift a whisper). Drift usually indicate with something drift by
river. This poem uses the idiom figurative language too. The phrase that has the idiom figurative language
is (plane of blue). I think plane of blue has one more meanings, it can mean the plane with color is blue or
the way that caused the sadness. Although this poem is very poetic I just can find two figurative
languages that are metaphor and idiom.
This poem has a free form. This poem has an irregular and regular rhyme.
Silent beauty – ever yours;
An ear to pick the metaphors
Of tonal dance in words you say,
Grasp a thought in verse you pray
We can see that the rhyme is regular. But the other stanza has an irregular rhyme for example
So now I've taken leave of life,
I thought you'd like to know, I still
Possess a mind in love, oh wife;
A soulful eye to catch a show of
The author may be use these form because he concern in meaning of the poem and less care with the form
of rhyme.
So, by looking this A Fresh Endeavour poem, we can conclude that this poem is a love poem. This poem
has two figurative languages they are metaphor and idiom. The form in this poem is free and has an
irregular and regular rhyme.
