“Story”- refers to a
narrative written discourse,
while “grammar”- is usually
described as the study of
words, however in
reference to STORY
GRAMMAR in reading
refers to the elements or
parts of a story or
selection.
Definition of STORY GRAMMAR:
 It’s a technique which classifies the
components of a story and specifies
relationships among its parts.
 Type of strategy for Cognitive Literacy for
elementary school students.
 It aims to improve students’
comprehension in reading by giving
them a framework they can use when
reading stories.

Story Grammar of “Goldilocks
and the Three Bears”
GOLDILOCKS & THE THREE BEARS
SETTING
Once upon a time, there were three bears, the mama bear, the papa bear, and
the baby bear. They lived in a tiny house in a great big forest.
Theme
Initiating Event:
One day a little girl named Goldilocks came by.
Internal Response:
She was surprised to see the house and noticed it was empty.
Plot
Subgoal & attempt:
She went inside to find the three bears foods, and ate the baby bear’s soup,
broke the baby bear’s chair, and fell asleep in the baby bear’s bed.
Outcome:
The bears return to find things eaten and broken and to find
Goldilocks in the baby bear’s bed.
Resolution
Goldilocks ran away
