Thanks a lot for having me here at MakerCon. Humbled and excited to represent Atmel here at an historic place in a historic area here in SF.
It is a miracle I stand in front of you this afternoon. I had the pleasure of visiting a HK hospital on this trip. Couldn’t walk this AM….All is well now…
I was here at Maker Faire Shenzhen last year and had a wonderful experience, which made me decide to come back to Shenzhen and meet with old & new friends! For those who haven’t added me on WeChat, please scan the QR Code here and friend me, friend Atmel!
As for innovation, here is what I would like to share with you, it is sort of my understanding of innovation.
Shenzhen is a city of miracles, China’s first special economic zone which innovatively showed to the world how fast and creative a city can be built up. The city is globally famous for its comprehensive offerings in electronics industries, we are all amazed by the completeness of Shenzhen’s supply chain and manufacturing capabilities. Now, the city is going to lead the “Third Industry Revolution”, I wish the city nothing but all the best.
We seem to be a ‘regular’ Semiconductor company (and we actually are a GREAT one). However, there is more to us that we reveal in this company description…
We have taken a different approach to marketing. Traditionally, ‘we’ were selling ‘parts’ like this…
Today, we ALSO market like this. There is a deep emotional connection (possible) between company and customers. A potential that is rarely tapped into by companies like us.
Did you know ?
Arduino is going mainstream !
In China, we have also seen quite a number of Arduino fans showcasing their creativities. Here are a few examples from our Atmel Arduino hardware design contest.
Copied by many, there is only one REAL mobile trailer….
If this isn’t a burning platform for change, then I don’t know what is…
I also did a quick research on Kickstarter, there are 35 projects from Shenzhen on there.
We love you, and we want to grow with you together, help you and make you successful.
Atmel does not only make silicon, we also provide numerous hardware and software tools that help creative people get their designs ready for production, and we make most of these tools are available for free. We have to charge a bit of money for the hardware as it costs us money to produce it and have it shipped to you, but thats basically it. All of our software and our software tools are free for anyone to download from our website.
The reason we do this is that it make a ton of sense. People need to get done designing their hardware and writing their software, and get their stuff into production before they buy a bunch of parts from us, so we make tools that help them get that done as fast as possible. And we are hoping that some of you will be able to benefit from that as well.
Our AVR microcontrollers have broad customer reach through our software Studio development platform with over 65K active developers, through our Atmel Gallery App Store with over 50K users.
Even more, AVR has been the favorite with the Arduino community. community consists of professional engineers, hobbyists and students that use an Arduino board, with an AVR device, to jump-start their designs.
Over 1.2 M Arduino development boards in the market with the majority of these boards powered by an AVR.
Over 200K members in our AVR Freaks community.
Since most 32-bit users are also 8-bit customers, we are using our broad global base of AVR customers as a key base to grow our 32-bit business.

Anyone remember Quin Etnyre, the 13-year-old maker at Maker Faire White House last year? He came to Maker Faire Shenzhen this year as well, as a young and mighty entrepreneur!
Here are the steps that explained how did Quin started!
I believe in China, in Shenzhen there are also a huge number of passionate makers who would like to take a further step on their creativities, Atmel is the right parter you should look for!
