The purpose of this assignment is for you to:
Understand the purpose of concept art for computer games
Be able to explore the potential of drawing media
Scenario
You are a freelance games concept artist trying to break into the industry. In order to do this you will need to expand your
portfolio. As part of your career development you are going to approach a range of developers with a view to securing
commissions.
The first stage of the process involves you finding out about the role concept art plays within the production process,
experimenting with media and drawing techniques and then profiling a style of concept art that suits your own abilities and
interests.

The Purpose of Concept Art
Evaluate the purpose and use of concept art within the games development process. Research illustrations created
for use as anatomical art (character), object art and environment art. Comment on the styles and purpose of these
illustrations.
You are aiming to critically evaluate the purpose of concept art for games with supporting arguments and
elucidated examples and consistently using subject terminology correctly.

Mark-making Portfolio
Produce a portfolio of drawing that explores:
Anatomy
Objects
Environments
by experimenting with the following media: Pencil
Charcoal
Pastel
Coloured pencils and crayons
Ink pens
Marker pens
You will need to systematically digitise and annotate each piece of work and publish it to the relevant part of your
blog. Comment on the characteristics of your drawings, the effects/limitations and creative potential.
Remember that the exercises carried out in class are a bare minimum and you should aim to experiment further with
additional drawing techniques and try out other media. You are aiming to develop a style of working that suits your
abilities.
