Topic:
Join us to hear more about how dreams from the past can dramatically change and evolve into something completely new. In this presentation you will hear all about John's initial experiences in Opensim while still working at Linden Lab, the creation and mangement of "Pathlandia," initial explorations of the Hypergrid, and how it all fits in with what he remembers as Linden Lab's original vision of an expanding Metaverse of self-hosted and interconnected virtual worlds.

3. Session Description
Join us to hear more about how dreams from the past can
dramatically change and evolve into something completely new.
In this presentation you will hear all about John's initial
experiences in OpenSim while still working at Linden Lab, the
creation and management of "Pathlandia," initial explorations of
the Hypergrid, and how it all fits in with what he remembers as
Linden Lab's original vision of an expanding Metaverse of self-
hosted and interconnected virtual worlds.

9. Past Dreams
2007 Linden Lab’s Architecture Working Group (AWG) begins work on Open Grid Protocol (OGP)
2008 Open Grid Public Beta begins with teleports between SL Beta Grid and IBM’s Opensim Grid
Crista Lopes invents OpenSim's Hypergrid system
2009 VWRAP (Virtual World Region Agent Protocol) Working Group chartered
2010 Linden Lab ceases involvement in VWRAP Working Group and Virtual World Interoperability
2011 VWRAP Working Group shut down (Crista Lopes’ post mortem)
2013 OpenSim version 0.7.5 released with HyperGrid version 2.0
38. Future Reality
Digital Rights Management
Brand New Business Models
Protect existing Revenue Streams
Go with the Known
Embrace the Unknown
Bet the Farm
39. Healthy Futures requires Freedoms
Example: Using the Singularity Viewer to export a prim-based
object in OpenSim to an industry-standard mesh model in a web-
based Jibe world.
A limited-use license is not ownership.
Technology that allows you to save your content locally and then
migrate it to other platforms is a GOOD THING.
Ownership is a critical freedom.
40. Build and gather around comforting campfires...
...then go explore the unknown night together.
