27. Pre-Medication
The AHA recommends that people with
artificial heart valves and serious
congenital heart defects take antibiotics
prior to dental visits.
Most people with artificial joint
replacements are also required to take
pre-medication.
28. Coumadin
Notify your dentist if you are taking a blood
thinner.
This may need to be discontinued for
certain dental procedures.
29. Fosamax, Actonel, Boniva
Oral Bisphosphonates (for osteoporosis)
increase the risk of developing
Osteonecrosis of the jaw.
The risk is less than one tenth (1/10) of
one percent (1%), but patients must be
aware of this.
31. Dry Mouth
Many medications have dry mouth as an
unwanted side effect. These include:
blood pressure medications, cholesterol
lowering drugs, allergy and asthma
medications, and many others.
Dry mouth leads to an increase in tooth
decay.
