2. 1.Retribution
Society ‘taking something
back’ from criminals.
Similar but not the same
as revenge. Think of it as
‘An eye for an eye’

3. 2. Deterrence
• Two key assumptions:
1. (Individual)the first is that specific
punishments imposed on offenders will
"deter" or prevent them from committing
further crimes. (Going to prison is inversely
related to deterence).
2. (Social) the second is that fear of punishment
will prevent others from committing similar
crimes. Justice has to be ‘seen to be done’.

4. 3. Rehabilitation
Assumes that most people
are not inherrently criminal,
but with help and support,
they can see the error of
their ways and ultimately
lead a ‘useful’ life.

5. 4. Restoration
Punishment may take the
form of the offender
"righting the wrong", or
restitution. (i.e.
community service).

6. 5.Incapacitation
• Imprisonment separates
offenders from the
community, removing or
reducing their ability to carry
out certain crimes. The death
penalty does this in a
permanent way.
