Human well-being is highly dependent on ecosystems and the benefits they provide such as food and drinkable water. Over the past 50 years, however, humans have had a tremendous impact on their environment. To better understand the consequences of current changes to ecosystems and to evaluate scenarios for the future, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has launched a comprehensive scientific study, the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment. What actions could be taken to limit harmful consequences of ecosystem degradation?

Dr Mike Wells presentation at The Sustainable Green Infrastructure Conference 2014 - Green Infrastructure Good, Biodiverse Green Infrastructure Better. Dr Mike Wells - Director - Biodiversity by Design, UK Research Fellow – Bath School of Architecture and Civil Engineering Dr Mike Wells is an ecologist with over 25 years experience of ecological science and over 20 years in professional ecological consultancy. Mike's key interests now lie in finding new opportunities for biodiversity enhancement, sustainable ecosystem goods and services and ecological education by exploring in the 'creative gaps' between disciplines including Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Ecology, Engineering and Art. Mike has worked on a many large-scale ecological assessment and design projects around the world and specialises in the Green Infrastructure aspects of eco-masterplanning and delivery and assessment of the ecosystem services gained. Mike co-founded Biodiversity by Design in 2006 expressly to engage in promoting truly sustainable exemplar development projects, multifunctional landscapes and global biodiversity conservation. In 2007 Mike was part of the UK National Regeneration Agency (English Partnerships) national training panel on 'designing for biodiversity'. Mike is currently a member of the European Federation of Environmental Professionals and also a member of the UK All-Party Parliamentary Committee on Biodiversity. The term hydrodiversity, is based on concepts internationally recognized biodiversity and geodiversity. The principles, the Range, and collective contractual parties are interests of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). To the geodiversity is regarded as fundamental research and actions on the future use of natural occurrences. Territories of natural environments, raw materials and natural resources are sustainable way, and through studies are based on scientific ratings criteria. Setting an initial proposal, it must be the variety of water according to its physical state, shapes, locations, backgrounds, physical and chemical compositions dissolved in materials, types of uses, properties, functions, and others. It is known it is known, valued and used based on strategies of sustainable planning. Waters are an important factor, for it is a great diversity in nature. This hydrodiversity is a term that has several means to differentiate the natural water resources (Mendiondo & Tucci, 1997; Oudin et al., 2008), valuing them for better preservation (Graf, 2001; Sismic & Belij, 2008) or to exemplify content for environmental education, as in Portugal water sites (Machado & Oliveira, 2010). Natural waters are anomalous characteristics of aqueous and complex environments. Due to its thermodynamic properties of fluids are special reagents from the early stages of the planet. The origin of life and evolution was a result of biological activity has been a surge of geological process. The study of different living beings is dependent in each type of water, the complex or incipient. The water provides all kinds of life; therefore, biodiversity is closely influenced by the characteristics of the water existing in each region.

Technology and Globalization Examine the relationship between advances in technology and the responsibilities of global citizenship. Describe how technology has changed the way in which people pursue knowledge and how they address social concerns. Assess the challenges and benefits of a technical and global community, and recognize the impact of technological and global influences in your life. Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length. Support your claims with examples from required material(s) and/or other scholarly sources, and properly cite any references. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts by Day 7. Reflecting on General Education Explain what you have learned about the principles guiding general education from this course and the courses you have taken in the past. What are the most important concepts you have learned (a) from this course and (b) throughout your time as a university student? What are your plans for putting your education to use within your community? How might your newly-acquired knowledge and skills shape your personal and professional development? Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length. Support your claims with examples from required material(s) and/or other scholarly sources, and properly cite any references. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts by Day 7. Ashford 6: - Week 5 - Final Research Paper Climate Change Final Research Paper Research the responsibility of a critical thinker in a contemporary society. You may choose any topic that deals with a contemporary social concern. Examine the principles of critical thought in relation to the chosen societal concern, and consider the importance of ethics, moral reasoning, a research-based process to search for truth, and the advantages of information technology in gathering data. Potential social concerns include, but are not limited to health (e.g., obesity, smoking, or underage drinking), poverty (e.g., homelessness, basic needs, or transportation issues), family relations and dynamics (e.g., teen violence, physical abuse, depression, or suicide), social media (e.g., privacy), immigration (e.g., illegal), and education (e.g., plagiarism and/or cheating). Your Final Research Paper should: 1. Include a literature review of three scholarly sources based on the selected contemporary issue. Analyze the validity of the author’s arguments and/or biases. 2. Explain how academic knowledge impacts the social elements and institutions of both local and global communities. 3. Assess how the principles of active citizenship could impact the contemporary issue during the next five to ten years. 4. Include at least one reference to a multimedia component (i.e., podcast, interactive website, blog, or video) and evaluate the relevance of this piece in relationship to academic knowledge and the selected issue. My first publication at UNICEF sheds light on the impacts of climate change on children's access to safe water and sanitation. If you think about it, it's staggering how more than 7.3 billion people have to compete over the extremely small fraction (definitely less than 1%) of the planet's available water resources -- and it'll only exacerbate as climate change continues. Who will suffer the most? The poorest children in the most vulnerable regions, such as coastal areas or the regions with extreme heat stress. Check out this short brief prepared for #COP22 and stay tuned for the full report by next year's #Worldwaterday! So honored and privileged to work with the amazing colleagues.
