Section A: Action Adventure Films
How can I revise Media Studies?
• Study/create/annotate a glossary;
– Key terminology is vital in Media Studies, you need to make sure you not only use key terms but also understand them,
this means you can use them appropriately.
• Watch 5 minute extracts from action adventure films;
– The more you practice the skills involved with analysing these clips the more confidently you can approach the exam.
Either take the clips from YouTube or ask me for them.
• Analyse the 5 minute extract;
– You know the elements to focus on (Characters & events, technical elements (Sound/Camerawork/Editing/Mise-en-
Scène) and representation) copy out the table you have been given before and write out notes.
• Answer the practice questions;
– They are always likely to be either similar or the same.
1) Explain two ways in which the characters and/or events in the extract fit the action adventure genre.
2) Explain how each of the following is used to create effects that fit the action adventure genre:
– Soundtrack
– Camerawork
– Editing
– Mise-en-Scène
3) Discuss the ways in which people and/or an event are represented in the extract.
• Go through your book/s;
– Study the key concepts, familiarise yourself with what is being asked of you, ensure you understand the exam.
2. Media Studies Revision
Section B: TV Comedy
How can I revise Media Studies?
• Study/create/annotate your key words;
– Key terminology is vital in Media Studies, you need to make sure you not only use key terms but
also understand them, this means you can use them appropriately.
• Watch your case studies;
– You should be able to refer in detail to specific examples from your two texts (Live at The Apollo
& Phoneshop), whilst Section B does not require textual analysis it does require plenty of
examples.
• Learn the institutional information about the case studies;
– You will need to know not only when they are scheduled (be as specific as possible, day, time,
online(?))and on what channel and why that channel, but also what they are competing against.
• Learn the list of audience pleasures;
– Don’t just regurgitate the list, you should be able to apply each please to both of your case
studies.
• Go through your book/s;
– Study the key concepts, familiarise yourself with what is being asked of you, ensure you
understand the exam.
