THREE RULES
RULE 1. For most words, simply add ‘s’ to the
last letter
RULE 2. For words ending in s,x,z,ch or sh, add
‘es’ to the last letter
RULE 3. For words ending with a consonant (any
letter except a, e,I, o, u) before ‘y’, drop the ‘y’
and add ‘ies’
3. Plural Practice
1. Hank moved the (desk) and (chair) into the
classroom.
2. The doctor checked my (ear) and took two
(X-ray).
3. Put all the (broom) and (brush) into the
closet.
4. Will the (bank), (store) and (factory) be
closed for the holidays?
4. EXCEPTIONS
1. Words that end in f or fe may change to ves,
but for many words, just add an s, such as
staffs and safes.
2. Words ending in o should always be checked
in the dictionary, but it is usually safe to just add
an s – sometimes, es – or sometimes either!

3. Some words have entirely different forms.
Foot – feet Mouse – mice Child - children
4. Some words stay the same.
one series – two series one deer – twenty deer
