The Claremont Consortium administers a biennial survey to the approximately 5,000 Sakai-using undergraduate and graduate students in its member institutions [Claremont McKenna College, Claremont Graduate University, Harvey Mudd College, Keck Graduate Institute, Pitzer College, Pomona College and Scripps College]. The presentation summarizes findings from the 2008 and 2010 surveys. We identify changes in student use of Sakai; student assessment of the benefits and drawbacks of courses that use Sakai; which tools students find most useful in their courses as well as tool usage patterns, and student suggestions to improve Sakai and the ways that it is used in their classes. Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are a relatively recent online learning phenomenon that has developed in the last five years. The opportunity that MOOCs offer to developing countries has generated significant interest from higher education as it has opened doors to step into territories that were never available before this era. This paper reports on the research findings of the impact of MOOCs in developing countries. The key challenges and opportunities identified by the researchers in using the MOOC concept within the Sri Lankan higher education context is discussed. It also highlights how developing countries can transform education, and provide lifelong learning opportunities which will give access to learning resources, innovative learning technologies, higher engagement and collaborative learning opportunities with international experts.

Reflection-on-action is necessary to derive meaning from one’s experiences. This paper revisits research data from an elongated study on the impact of a distance education programme on the professional practice of graduates. The study focused on 300 graduates and 128 principals, selected through multi-stage and purposive sampling. The researcher used a mixed-methods research design with specific focus on Kirkpatrick’s, and Baldwin and Ford’s training evaluation models. The researcher’s curiosity was triggered by the need to understand possible reasons for the participants’ views, as these are contrary to the norm. This account indicates a clear institutional policy on quality assurance, practices guided by the policy, an ongoing monitoring of the distance education students’ profiles, improved programme design, student support structures, programme design and research focused on programmes as possible reasons. The author argues that higher education practitioners, irrespective of delivery mode, could benefit from the valuable lessons learnt from the exercise. In this study, we examine university students’ beliefs and behaviors related to social media, identity, and boundaries in a higher education context. Findings suggest a complex and at times contradictory relationship between students and social media, in which they enjoy free access to information about and contributed by other people and freely share about themselves in a social or personal context, but are reticent to be active contributors in an academic context. Although students seek information about their instructors online, they do not believe that instructors might reciprocate. In contrast to a common assumption, they do not want to use social media in their coursework and prefer to restrict both their communication with instructors and coursework to private tools and settings.

#iassist40 presentation, Toronto, 6/6/2014. Abstract: Edinburgh DataShare, an institutional data repository, is six years old. It was built as a demonstrator in DSpace by EDINA and Data Library and has been given new life by the University of Edinburgh’s Research Data Management initiative. Following testing by pilot users in various departments last year, DataShare is confirmed as a key RDM service. Since 2008 much external infrastructure has grown around data sharing, and software developers, publishers and librarians are creating new innovations around the sharing and re-use of data daily. How can DataShare be shaped to fit in to this ever-more-sophisticated environment? A number of ongoing developments are helping us integrate the repository in the global context. DataShare is being indexed in Thomson-Reuter’s Data Citation Index. We aspire to attain the Data Seal of Approval for DataShare, a badge that confers trustworthiness through peer review. It is listed in re3data.org and databib registries of data repositories. We offer via extension, peer review of datasets to our depositors by listing journals that publish ‘data papers’ such as F1000 Research. Locally, as Information Services builds new data services such as the Data Store, [private data] Vault and the [metadata-only] Register, we can focus DataShare on its named purpose.

Following the needs of today’s society and the development and needs of learners, the project E-competent teacher within E-Education defines and describes the digital competencies or e-competencies that represent the basic level of digital literacy. They refer to teachers, pre-school teachers, ICT co-ordinators, school principals and deputy school principals. Our seminars mostly focus on the first level of digital literacy since they support the development of digital competencies. Partly, the second level is also included because the blended learning seminars enable participants to put into practice the knowledge they gain on various strategies, approaches, content and materials. By doing so, they apply the acquired competencies to their professional field. The results of the evaluation we have already done show that since 2009 there were 36.574 participations at the seminars (20.296 participants out of 30.000 teachers in Slovenia), 14.920 workshops with 39.073 participations, more than 70% of principals attended 1 or more leadership courses 99,3% schools were participating in the project, 285 members of development teams and 760 trained collaborators were involved in the project. http://www.sio.si/

Globalization through the mediation of information and communication technologies influences greatly higher education (appearing transnational education, great amount of alternative providers of higher education and runaway staff mobility in virtual space). Virtual mobility attracts attention of politicians and experts in the field of education (“The Bologna Process and the European Higher Education Area” – Salamanca Convention, 2001, includes an idea of joint European approach to virtual mobility and transnational education; “Mobility for Better Learning” – Mobility strategy 2020 for the European Higher Education Area, 2011) and scientists (National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine project “International Education on the Basis of Flexible Centers of Distance Technologies and Computer-Tele-Communicational Networks”). Problem of mobility is one of the most disputable among higher education researchers in Europe. Development of virtual academic mobility transforms modern education into a social institution which could provide different educational services to humans for their lifelong learning. Modern situation demands attention to distance education development through creation of specialized informationaleducational courses and areas of e-learning, development of e-libraries and databases, support of “network lecturers” and e-courses developers. It should stimulate university staff media-educational training they could project educational environment using modern information technologies. Our task was to investigate Ukrainian academicians’ experience and e-competences necessary for participation in virtual mobility processes (sample – 710). The instruments of measurement and diagnostics were a specially constructed questionnaire and a method of self-evaluation of ecompetences necessary for effective participation in virtual academic mobility.

I had the honour of presenting my reflections on the autobiography of Professor Isaac Folorunso Adewole, titled "Uncommon Grace." As someone deeply invested in documentation and history, I found Professor Adewole's decision to narrate his journey from humble beginnings to occupying one of the highest offices in the land both inspiring and invaluable. In this eloquently written memoir, Professor Adewole provides a comprehensive account of his life, from his ancestral roots to his time as Minister of Health in Nigeria. The unique aspect of this autobiography is that he portrayed himself authentically without taking the help of third-party narratives, which is often seen in accounts of high-ranking officials. His upbringing was greatly influenced by his father's commitment to education. He became a prominent figure in advocating for the rights of the underprivileged through trade unionism. His story is one of unwavering determination, resilience, and faith. His experiences, including both successes and struggles, provide priceless lessons on leadership, perseverance, and the alignment of personal values with public service. During his tenure as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, he led with visionary leadership and transformative impact. His accomplishments have been meticulously documented in the book, which can serve as a blueprint for rejuvenating institutions and promoting academic excellence. In the latter part of his autobiography, Professor Adewole shares his experiences as a Minister, detailing the challenges he faced while serving the public with integrity and courage. His reflections on the complexities of public service, coupled with his commitment to the well-being of the nation, offer practical insights for policymakers and citizens alike. I have carefully read "Uncommon Grace" and it is more than just a memoir. It is a timeless book that is hard to put down once you start reading. While intellectuals may continue to debate whether uncommon grace was made possible by uncommon preparation or the other way around, I applaud Professor Adewole for sharing his ideas, knowledge, and experience with the public. I highly recommend this book to everyone.

Yesterday in Lagos, I had the honour of delivering a lecture titled “If this Giant Must Walk; Manifesto for a New Nigeria“ at the Inaugural Memorial Lecture of Prince Emeka Obasi, founder and publisher of Business Hallmark and the inspirational figure behind the Public Policy Research and Analysis Centre - promoters of the revered Zik Leadership and Governance Awards. I discussed the many sources of concern about our country’s future prospects, including violent conflicts, revisionist contestations of the Amalgamation Act of 1914, discontent with the Nigerian economy, and dysfunctions in the federal system. Central to my lecture was the call to address these challenges by crafting a new manifesto for Nigeria. This manifesto, I proposed, should champion integrity, compassion, character, competence, and commitment to national unity and progress within a framework of democratic governance and cultural diversity. I firmly believe that by doing so, we can guide Nigeria to stride forward with pride and purpose. I want to thank the Board and Management of the Public Policy Forum for their kind invitation to speak at this important event and for their commitment to promoting public policy research and analysis in Nigeria. My gratitude also to the late Prince Emeka Obasi, a true inspiration and a builder of bridges across divides, for his contributions to the country. My thoughts are with his family and loved ones.

9. Initial results - overview • 472 complete responses (45,5%) • 566 incomplete responses (54,5%) • Duration: 4 weeks (February/March 2014)

10. Demographics • Students: 412 • Teachers: 44 • Librarians: 16 • Average age: 26,5 • Average PC use: 12 years

11. E-learning • Institutional LMS awareness: 429 vs. 43 • Using LMS 249 vs. 180 not using • Used LMS for: avg. 2,74 years • Average number of courses: 4,63 • Time spent online, education-related: 261 respondents = 2-3 hours a day

12. Mobile access • Mobile Internet use: 352 using (74%) • Smartphone owners: 301 • Tablet owners: 104 • Android: 117 vs. iOS: 15 (incomplete data) • Main problems: speed, screen size, desktop-oriented edu activities

13. Future steps • Long-term research (2014-2016) • Increase in the number of institutions / countries? • Development of common technical solutions and implementation policies
