1. (a) In groups of eight, carry out the following activity and answer reasons for land
constraint
the questions that follow. Read the instructions before you
begin.
Instructions:
Get a large sheet of newspaper and place it on the floor.
1
Two members will stand within the area covered by the newspaper without going
2 out of the area or touching the floor.
The other members will then join in, one at a time, to stand on the newspaper.
3
Try to squeeze as many members as possible onto the newspaper.
4
What happened as more members joined in to stand on the sheet of newspaper? How many
members could fit on the sheet of newspaper? Record your observation in the box below.
As more members stood on the newspaper, it became more packed and
crowded. Each person had little space to stand on. We had to stand very close
to each other. Some of us stood on one leg to make room for others. Finally, the
space left was too small to allow another person to stand on the newspaper.
(Accept other plausible answers.)

2. (b) Imagine that the newspaper represents a piece of land and the group members
represent the people living on the land.
(i) Refer to your observations recorded in (a).
What does this situation tell you about the amount of land available?
The amount of land available is limited.
(ii) In this situation, more space is needed on the newspaper. Likewise, there is a
rising demand for land. List four reasons behind the rising demand for land.
• Population growth
• Increasing demand for housing
• Growth of industries
• Increasing demand for arable land
(Accept other plausible answers.)
(iii) What does this situation tell you about how the increase in the number of people
will affect a piece of land?
As the number of people increases, the piece of land becomes overcrowded and
exceeds its carrying capacity. Thus the resources would have to be shared among
more people, and this adds pressure to the land.
