- Good afternoon and welcome. I’d like to introduce the Ed Acad’s Admin Asst, Ms. Chickilah Davenport and I am LS-O, director of the Ed Acad. We are going to explain how the Academy can help you in the ‘education’ portion of your work. EA has two major areas of emphasis; to help faculty: --by relaying new teaching methodologies, skills --engage in SoTL
- Choose one or two people in the audience and ask, “What does “scholarship of teaching and learning mean to you?” Green: Teachers in all settings have these questions, so whether you’re in a traditional classroom, clinic, lab, online, you can engage in this process. Pink: Most of us ask these questions (Did X work? What went wrong? How can I improve that experience?) and rework from one cohort or semester to the next. --this reworking is one aspect of “scholarly teaching” --we may not have thought about using the “research” model to do this, but with just a little thought at the start, most of our teaching work is ripe to use as research Blue: Taking this to the next level, we disseminate our findings, just as we would in our content disciplines
- Narrative: So can you take what you currently have from your teaching and turn it into scholarship? Absolutely!
- Educators Academy provides 3 avenues for SoTL: Programs, Services, and Membership. We’ll tell you about each of those
- --The programs offered by Educators Academy provide practical information and help for your teaching and for your scholarship. --Many of our programs are facilitated by UAMS colleagues, who have “been there and done that” and want to help fellow faculty members succeed. --Chickilah is going to describe a couple of our programs for you; Chickilah
- --EA offers a small, $2500 1-year grant for educational innovation. --To be eligible to apply for this grant, you must be a member of the Academy. --First was offered fall 2015; 3 submissions and 4 authors; this spring 2016, 9 submissions with 26 authors! --The call for papers is in the spring with the award conveyed July 1.
- Question for audience: how many of you have participated in this program? --If someone raises a hand, ask about their project and experience…how did they benefit? --Teaching Scholars offers its participants the opportunity to learn about various teaching techniques and how to evaluate them. --Important aspect is individual mentoring on an educational scholarship project --end result is a scholarly item to be shared --20 years, almost 200 scholars and over 1000 papers and presentations that those scholars participated in over that time
- 2015 saw the first Teaching and Learning Symposium. For 2016 we teamed up with the COM Teach the Teacher conference TtT Symposium. It is a 1-day event in late January. There is an education theme (SoTL; student learning communities) with an expert external speaker & UAMS faculty speakers. We also showcase the peer-reviewed educational scholarship of UAMS faculty and this meeting provides a way for faculty to network and share their educational scholarship and research projects. Question for audience: How many of you attend the Symposium? What worked for you? What didn’t work for you?
- Our newest program began this past Nov. as the “members’ meeting”. The group decided to have presentations on a variety of topics and no one wanted to limit these to members. --Right now this series is held on the 2nd Wednesday of the month from 4 – 5 pm. I know that time doesn’t suit everyone! --We are offering the presentation as a live webinar via Blackboard Collaborate and we are recording each one through Collaborate as well. --You can find links to these on the EA website.

- In addition to our programs, EdAcad offers services tailored to faculty needs.
- --One of the goals of the EA is to “celebrate faculty”. --We held the first “faculty thank you” in May 2015. --We’ve decided to move the event to September in order for newly-arrived faculty to meet and network with folks who’ve been here a while and to become engaged in the Ed Acad.

- Purpose of membership: Structured so that members learn about scholarly teaching and progress to education scholarship. Also, this membership structure provides a pathway to P&T.
