Based on the original PowerPoint template designed and created by Jeff White in 2000, this version features several updates—including more animations, graphics, music, and sound effects—to mimic the gameshow. The three lifelines used in this edition—50:50, Phone a Friend, and Ask the Audience—are derived from the show's classic format.

297. Help 1 of 3: Game Setup
• Use the Edit menu and Replace… to insert questions and answers. In the Find box, type in “Question X” (where X is the question
number, 1 through 15). In the Replace box, type in the question. Then, enter “Answer X-1” and the first answer, “Answer X-2” and the
second answer, etc. (Capitalize as indicated.)
• To set up the 50:50 Lifeline slides (second usable slide in each question set including the Phone a Friend and Ask the Audience/Host
lifelines):
– 1. Select the first answer to be eliminated by clicking on the text of the answer. Select the text and delete it. (This should leave a
blank hexagon.)
– 2. Repeat with the second eliminated answer, and then repeat with each further slide.
• To set up the Answer slides:
– 1. Select the hexagon behind the correct answer by right-clicking on the hexagon. (Click above or below the answer text to avoid
selecting the text instead. Once selected, the hexagon should have a rectangular border around it.) Select Format Autoshape;
choose the Colors and Lines tab, choose the Fill color and select green (it should be provided in the bottom row of colors.)
– 2. Repeat with each further slide.
• On the title screen, the Fastest Finger First option will link to the Meet the Contestants and the Fastest Finger First slides, if you would
like to use them. To set up the Fastest Finger First slide (Slide 13), fill in the Fastest Finger question and the four answers. On the answer
slide (Slide 14), replace each orange question mark with the letter of the appropriate answer in order, starting at the top. Fill in the answer
corresponding to each letter. Click the right arrow icon to view the Who Was First and Welcome to the Hot Seat slides. USAGE
NOTE: the Fastest Finger question slide includes the music for Fastest Finger; this music is 25 seconds long. Use the music as a timer;
when the music ends, go to the answer slide.
• If your version of PowerPoint does not come with the Copperplate Gothic Bold font, please download and install it for optimal viewing.
298. Help 2 of 3: Lifelines
• The 50:50 lifeline can be used to eliminate two incorrect answers as determined during game setup. Clicking on the 50:50 lifeline icon
will link to a slide with only two answer choices such that one answer is correct, and the other is incorrect. The Phone a Friend and Ask
the Audience/Host lifelines will still be available to click on should the contestant need to use them for the same question. USAGE
NOTE: a blank slide with the Millionaire background is intentionally positioned between the question slide and 50:50 lifeline slide to
prevent anyone from seeing the 50:50 slide as the Next Slide in Presenter View.
• The Phone a Friend lifeline can be used to ask one other student to help. Clicking on the Phone a Friend lifeline icon will link to a 30-
second timer slide. The lifeline’s theme will automatically play on a loop while the contestant determines whom to enlist for help. When
the contestant and friend are ready, press the spacebar to activate the timer, countdown theme, and sound effects. After the timer reaches
zero, click on the curved arrow icon to return to the question slide. USAGE NOTE: returning to the question slide before the clock
finishes will reset the clock.
• The Ask the Audience lifeline can be used to ask the entire class, who gives their votes for the correct answer by letter. Clicking on the
Ask the Audience lifeline icon will link to a chart slide. Clicking on the chart will open Microsoft Excel; click on the “Enter Scores Here”
tab to enter the class votes for each answer, then click on the “Chart” tab so the chart will be visible. Go to the File menu and choose
Close and Return… to return to the slide show. Click on the curved arrow icon to return to the last slide viewed (i.e., the question slide
or the 50:50 lifeline slide).
• The Ask the Host lifeline can be used to ask you, the teacher, what you think is the correct answer. Clicking on the Ask the Host lifeline
icon will link to a slide that plays the lifeline’s theme. When you have given your final answer, press the spacebar to play the ending of
the lifeline’s theme and the background fade out animation. Click on the curved arrow icon to return to the last slide viewed (i.e., the
question slide or the 50:50 lifeline slide).
• USAGE NOTE: while the show’s classic format uses the first three lifelines, the primetime revival during the COVID-19 pandemic uses
Ask the Host in lieu of Ask the Audience. You are currently in the Ask the Audience Edition of the Millionaire template.
299. Help 3 of 3: Additional Tips
• Icons can help you navigate to different slides to simulate the gameshow experience:
– Right/left arrow: Takes you to the next/previous slide in sequence. Right/left arrow with bar: Takes you to the credits/title slide.
– Curved arrow: Takes you to the last slide viewed. House: Takes you back to the Cash Board.
– Walking man: Takes you to the Walk Away slide. Star: Takes you to the Money Won slide.
– ?: Takes you to the Help slides. X: Ends the slide show
– You can still toggle through slides with the arrow keys on your keyboard, but this is good if your desired slides and/or mouse-click
animations are juxtaposed in sequence (e.g., these three Help slides).
• If using the game for another person or another class, close the game and re-open it (this is to reset the links on the game board back to
orange and the answer choice links back to their default color).
• When you go to the Cash Board for the first time, an animation will build the Cash Board. After it finishes, a mouse-click will play an
animation and sound effect for each of the 3 lifelines. The Cash Board also has 4 visible sound buttons. Top left: Explain the Knockout
Game. Top right: Theme into Commercial. Bottom left: Theme out of Commercial. Bottom right: Out of Time Klaxon.
• Each question and 50:50 slide automatically plays the question’s theme music, but it stops when you click the Phone a Friend or Ask the
Audience/Host lifelines. After returning to the question slide, click the visible sound button to resume the question’s theme music.
• Since questions 1, 6, and 11 are found right after each “safe level” of guaranteed money ($0, $1,000, and $32,000, respectively), Walking
Away is not an option because it has the same outcome as providing an incorrect answer. For all other questions, click the walking man
icon if the contestant declares to Walk Away. Ask the contestant which answer they would have chosen had they wanted to risk it. A
mouse-click will reveal the correct answer. Click the Star icon to navigate to the contestant’s Total Winnings slide.
• You may type comments/instructions in the notes section of certain slides to aid the “Host” when navigating in Presenter View.
• You can use the annotation feature to cross out the lifeline icons as they are used during gameplay to help you keep track.
Jimmy Kimmel takes the Hot Seat with Regis Philbin as the host during a comedy edition episode of WWTBAM. It was recorded on September 9, 2001, and it aired on October 15, 2001. Kimmel later became the host when the show returned to primetime on April 8, 2020. Philbin passed away on July 24, 2020, at the age of 88.
