ENGINEERING AND
DESIGN PORTFOLIO
Keith F. Anderson
Technical Specialist
Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory
Hello. I am
Keith Anderson
The following slide show provides a brief summary of
my Engineering and Design projects.
Thank you in advance for viewing.
Problem: Handed two first surface mirrors and a spotting
scope and asked to mount the mirrors 15’ apart in a
structure that can be manipulated by an overhead crane
and lowered in the chase to view the decay pipe window.
Solution: Design a Periscope with motorized gimbal
mounts for the mirrors that can be remotely manipulated
so that the Periscope can remain fixed but the entire
surface of the window can be viewed.
Problem: Provide more airflow across the flags of
the NuMI horn strip line in order to provide
sufficient cooling so that it can be used at the higher
intensity beam power of the Nova project.
Solution: Capture airflow from airstream below and
to the side of the horn and redirect it up an in-
between the strip line where there is no airflow.

smoke testing through the final
product.
Problem: Insert a 50 pound inspection robot into the 50 meter BNB
decay pipe using the only access point available. A 2 foot diameter
hole through 8 feet of steel shielding that is 9 feet above ground
level and 20 feet away from the nearest point a person can stand.
Solution: Design a delivery system with video and lighting
that not only gets the robot into the hole but also provides
a runway and retractable ramp that allows the robot to
traverse the 24 inch vertical drop at the far end of the hole.
Sample images obtained from the video and
lighting outfitted on the delivery system
Problem: Remove the 4,000 pound BNB horn from
it’s vault with a failure of it’s positioning platform
that will not allow it to be lowered onto it’s
transport rails.
Solution: Develop a procedure and fixtures to safely raise
and support the horn off of it’s frozen adjusting jacks that
will also allow for a rail system that can be used for rolling
the horn into it’s transport coffin.
The following are some designs that weren’t
absolutely necessary, but either improved an
existing design or simplified a task.
Horn hanger spring positioners. The original design used extension springs to
hold the hangers from flopping around. Even though they did this, they did
not allow for precise positioning of the hangers which made connection to the
module difficult. My new design still allowed the hangers to pivot but was
precise enough to hold them in the primary operating position. This design
was later implemented on the Nova target hangers.
This simple stand and some slight modifications to the Horn 1 inner
conductor support fixture made the horn 1 inner to outer conductor
assembly both simpler and safer in that it was no longer necessary
to dismantle the entire fixture around the inner conductor while it
was hanging from the crane.
• The inner conductor could be raised vertical
and placed in the stand and with the removal
of a few bolts be lifted out of the top of the
fixture. The original design and procedure had
us dismantling the fixture from the bottom up
while the whole thing was suspended from the
crane. This was both hazardous to personnel
and the fragile inner conductor.
Target hall trolley rail casters. I designed these casters to simplify
and expedite the movement of the trolley rails from the elevator
shaft to the target hall. The old process of using a rolling gantry
hoist was cumbersome and time consuming.
The following are some designs that I did that
weren’t used because we went a different route or
just weren’t financially viable.
Nova baffle tube stretching fixture. I designed this
fixture to grip the end of the baffle tube and apply a
constant force to stretch the baffle tube over the
graphite core.
Horn vent line support bracket. I designed this bracket to reduce
mass and simplify the installation of the vent line. This was
intended to replace the large stainless steel clamps that are
currently used. This bracket is aluminum and would be welded to
the water tank.
Camera penetration shield door. I designed this
sliding shield door to cover the camera penetrations
in the C-0 hot storage facility.
Thank you very much for taking your time to
read through this.
