Editor's Notes
Opportunities for travel agents abound in medical tourism. In most places in the world, travel agents can offer – and some already do - a wide range of services related to medical tourism as part of their agency business. European Travel agents may be restricted in what kind of services they can offer. But even they can find new opportunities to grow their business by providing extra services related to the medical travel your customers will be undertaking. If you take the time to understand how the medical tourist differs from the holiday goer, you will discover ample new support services that will keep your customers safe and well, and allow them to enjoy a tourism experience without compromising the outcome of their medical treatment or procedure. Your business will grow as a result. Agents get no respect. If you think this is the case now with your travel business, you may find it even more so in the medical travel business. And why is this? So let’s find out Because, make no mistake, medical tourism is a health care service business, with travel and tourism providing small but important- and potentially lucrative- support services. Agents who understand the principles of medtcal tourism care management can create a thriving business. Other travel agents, who see an opportunity to expand into the wider universe of medical tourism, have no choice but to understand the elements of this new service industry, that once they cross a certain divide, they are sharing in the responsibility for a patient’s – not a customer’s – good medical experience. It’s these travel agents, who cross this divide from travel and tourism to health care and don’t know that they are doing so, that are creating some of the problems that the medical tourism industry is experiencing.
