“How about V2V using IoT, cloud and big data?”
“silly question”
“you don’t understand the problem”
“too slow, V2V requires 20ms”
“DSRC is the only way to do V2V”

5. “A stepping stone for V2X is the introduction of
vehicle-to-cloud .. Allows systems to be built up
over time instead of requiring full infrastructure ..
before realizing benefits to safety or
autonomous functionality.”
– Tejas Desai, Continental AG
“V2X is another sensor, but I believe there’s
more information available in cellular, 3G, and
4G than you can get with DSRC. If there’s a
detour or lane closure .. you need to go to the
cloud”
– Erik Coelingh, Volvo Cars

7. WHAT ABOUT DSRC?
my2cents looking at this as an outsider
• RF tech for V2V invented 20 years ago
• low-latency broadcasting <20ms w/in 300m
• adds a radio in cars & infrastructure
• can be used with IoT MQTT-SN in a WSN mesh
• some security concerns (DOS, PII)
7
8. WHAT CHANGED IN PAST 20 YEARS?
.. V2V landscape has evolved
• cheap sensors, cameras, laser, radar, etc.
• DSRC will be another sensor in your sensor suite
• IoT, Cloud, Big Data are now a thing
• V2V is bigger than 300m, smarter than just sensor data
• mobile networks now have 5x more coverage, 100x
faster bandwidth and 10x less latency making possible to
use it for some V2V use cases it couldn’t 20 years ago
• connected car with WiFi, LTE-A just around the corner
• powerful mobiles in every pocket, Waze, etc.
• more hacking mischief, can’t trust any 1 sensor
8
9. THE CAR IS A MOBILE “THING”
needing less driver distraction, better safety
“Latency is a driver distraction issue”
– Roger Lanctot @rogermud
Strategy Analytics
" terrible response times the norm
" Most are 15-90 seconds
" lack “always connected” instant response
" slow, unreliable, high mobile data costs
9
10. CONNECTED CAR IS A BIG DATA PROBLEM
• New cars produce 5GB/hour sensor data
• 60M cars manufactured each year
• If driven 4 hours a day ..
438 exabytes
10
11. HTTP IS NOT HOW YOU DO THAT
• No QoS, no reliable messaging
• Heavy, hundreds of bytes of overhead
• Not designed for wireless, high latency
• No pub/sub 1:many, many:many, etc
• No, always connected, instant response
• in summary, for connected car HTTP is ..
slow, heavy, unreliable
11
12. MQTT FOR MOBILE MESSAGING
Faster M2M and User Experience
" pub/sub with QoS - engineered for wireless
" socket, TLS 1.2, mutual authentication, etc.
" MQTT vs HTTPS on Android + 3G
– 93x faster throughput,13k msg/sec on my iPad
– 8x less network overhead – faster, cheaper
– 170x less battery to receive, 11x less to send
" Open standard, open source, very fast & reliable
" eclipse.org/paho C, Java, JavaScript
" mqtt.org for dozens of languages, platforms

+ Scale – millions of things
Faster IoT & Mobile user experience
MQTT, HTML5 WebSocket, JMS, MQ

16. PREDICTIVE MAINTENANCE
Improving owner experience
• real-time using sensor data, time-series
• proactive service, i.e. brake issue
• driving better customer service
16
17. BIG DATA DRIVES AUTONOMOUS

19. HOW AUTOMAKERS CAN GET STARTED
• Ask for Proof of Concept, is just 1 to 2 weeks and no charge
• Use Eclipse Paho MQTT code http://eclipse.org/paho
• Use my cloud or download free MessageSight for Developers
https://www.ibmdw.net/messaging/2013/11/29/ibm-messagesight-v1-1-2/
• IBM helps your developer (or supplier) update firmware
• Customize your car remote app or prototype a new one

21. WHO’S IN THE MIX WITH MQTT?
" usual suspects: IBM, AT&T, Sprint, SAP, Intel,
Cisco, Software AG, TIBCO, VMWare, Red Hat,
Pivotal, NIST, Eclipse, Apache, Emerson, Axway,
et al. (even Oracle - google “JavaOne MQTT”)
" cool kids: Libelium, Shaspa, M2Mi, QNX,
2lemetry, ThingWorx, Sierra Wireless, Telit, Wind
River, Eurotech, Elecsys, Xively, et al.
" car guys: 1/2 dozen automakers, trucks, several
tier-1 suppliers, telematics providers, etc.21

“.. performance improvements designed to make your
messaging experience even better. To do this without
killing battery life, we used a protocol called MQTT …
designed to use bandwidth and batteries sparingly…
