This was a power point I developed to show our shelter staff who work evenings and weekends, when volunteers come in to visit the seniors who temporarily live here at SOME\'s Dwelling Place. I did this training in March of 2009.
2. What do they do for us?
They lead Bible Studies
They make special celebration
dinners
They teach financial/budget
workshops
They visit on holidays
They decorate the sitting room
3. What does it mean to the
volunteers?
Gets them involved and contributing to a
concern or program they feel passionate
about
Sharpens their skills for future
employment
Gives them satisfaction of a job well done
Makes them feel they are part of a team
Helps them feel part of the community
4. Lets you do more and a broader
range of things than you thought
Helps you build a paid team that
feels appreciated, helped by
additional volunteer partnering
Allows your ideas to grow and take
root by including volunteers in your
thinking
Demonstrates your skill as a
supervisor
5. What’s in it for
Dwelling Place and ME?
Ask yourself:
– What job needs to be done?
– Can a volunteer do the job?
– Can I provide a welcoming
environment? HOW?
7. What does it take to fully use
the skills of volunteers?
Make sure the volunteers on your
shift are
– Supported
– Thanked
– Asked for input where appropriate
8. Skills of Good Monitor/Volunteer
Partnerships
They are upbeat and smile often
They communicate with each other
well – mostly in person
The monitor is ready for them when
they arrive, greets them warmly
The volunteers respect the monitors
Both are good listeners to the
residents
