Editor's Notes
Asked today to speak about efforts to embed HSS research across the soc challenge – and to focus on SC 1 Health, Demog Change as a specific example of how to do thisHad insights from DG Research, Nat delegates and NCPs as well as colleagues in North of Ireland and in national platforms - IHAThis part of afternoon – thinking about meso-scale of different research institutions – University, IT, other entity – about how to ensure the engagement of HSS researchers in opps and potential offered via H2020 – sn in patrticular how to get HSS researchers to engage in transdisciplinary research projects across all of the Societal Challenges.Disclaimer: this is a large question and I cannot claim any specific expertise (apart from being a researcher and being subject to pressures and frustrations of finding research funding). I also come from a socsci background and to some extent transdisciplinary links are more developed between socsci and other areas of science. Going to outline some of the steps/actions taken by UCC over last year – preparation for H2020 launchOverall emphasis in various activities – to answer/address 2 (inter-related questions)How best to pass on information – about opps available to HSS researchers in UCC/updates about content of W progs (H2020 for much of 2013 was rapidly changing)How to encourage HSS to particpate/not ‘de-select’ from participation in H2020 and the Societal Challenges2 questions are not totally discrete – for some/many HSS applicants unfamiliar with European funding – trying to work their way around structure, deadline, work programmes involved in H2020 and the Soc Challenges pillar in order to find potential funding opportunities and sources for their research can prove frustrating and demotivating.Something Commission has recognised implicitly (at least) in the design and organisation of new participant portal
In terms of how to channel information – we have developed a number of parallel approaches – drawing on outside speakers, internal structures and also developing a dialogue across whole College (will expand on this point in a bit) – flow of information must work both waysPresentations from NCPs about different Soc Challenge WPs for 2014/5 – so far 5 of 7 challengese.g. Kay NCP for Health Demog Change and Well-Being Challenge – talk through content of WP, outlining topics, taking questions etc. These happening alongside other H2020 information sessions on ERC, Marie Curie organised/advertised via RSS in UCC.Workshop/training sessions by Sean McCarhy – Hyperion - to all researchers in UCC )(– launch of ‘How to write a competitive proposal for Horizon 2020’)These open to all UCC researchers – encourage CACSSS staff to attend – re-email/tweet notices etc. Emails from College emphasise the trans-disciplinary dimension inH2020These follow fairly standard process - they are one-way (altho’ there is time for Q+A and at many of the SC presentations we have speakers from funded consortia projects in cognate parts of FP7 to reflect on their experience - this also worked to address another key reason for not engaging with EU funding –v. low success rates)2. Presentations and updates on Horizon 2020 to College Council and College R&I CommitteeOpen to all members of College staff – outlining the structure/organisation of H2020, developments in budgets and WPs, papers tabled at these meetings – dating back to March 2013To do:General introduction to Horizon 2020 – in conjunction with RO UCCSchool specific introductions to H2020
As part of College’s implementation of a strategic plan for research we – Prof O’Donovan and myself – engaged in a series of meetings with representatives from college’s constituent Departments and Schools and other research related entities – like ISS21 and DAHPurpose wasto discuss research strategy and engage in research infrastructure mapping exerciseWith who? Heads and member of College R&I committeeWhen? over May-June and Sept 2013Resulted in dialogue between college and school -allowed us communicate signif. of transdiscip. potential across diff SocChallAllowed Schools/Depts comment/outline signif (and likely source) of European funding in research planning – perhaps with view Schools/Depts might develop targets for funding application over 2015 onAllow Schools/Depts develop narrative about their research strengths and specific focus of interest among staff.Doing this allowed the College to score through WP (drafts over summer and final publication over Nov/Dec) and target at a topic-by-topic level across all Soc Challenges all 2014 opportunities that would be of interest to individual members of staff – co-ordinate this with IRC’s New Foundations callSent as email attachments cc’ing dept member of R&I committeeDetails in email – reminder of commitments to transdisciplinary approaches throughout H2020, deadlines for call, details about consortia size, supports for researchers etc.Eg – EBW and health
Part of research infrastruc – to find out from Schools/Depts – extent of their engagement in transdisciplinary projects/initiatives and to seek to include these as part of plans over 2014 to promote transdisciplinary engagements in researchTransdisciplinary research is not ‘new’ plenty of examples of research clusters + networks in College involved in these across UCC and beyond – ISS21, Environmental Citizenship RPA, Identities RPA (develop in response to Forfas Research Prioritisation Exercise in 20??)Important to engage productively with these as they are ‘real’ they work and have purchase and indie researchers (potential consortia leaders etc.) have ownership over these. Involving these in series of workshops over 2014Developing Trans-disciplinary Capacities (end January 2014)January 2014 – seminar presentations from UCC staff outlining examples of developing trans-disciplinary perspectives in researchoutline of Vilnius declaration and transdisciplinary orientation of H2020Suggested speakers: Prof Anita Maguire VP Research UCCColin Sage/Ger MulallyEnvironmental CitizenshipISS21 Family, Gender and Sexuality Cluster (Reproductive Technologies ESF group )Prof Alan Dobson/Dr Paul Bolger ERINote: circulate/disseminate Vilnus Declaration and Science Europe Humanities in the Societal Challenges report to all registered UCC staff..
