Articles of the Barons
When King John (1166-1216 A.D.) returned from
France in 1215 A.D., after a disastrous military
campaign, he was met by a group of English
barons who challenged him for his many abuses
of their fellow barons. They forced John to sign a
list of grievances and assurances that individual
freedoms would be granted in the future and
that justice would be allowed to rule. The
“Articles of the Barons” became known as the
Magna Carta of 1215 A.D. A key phrase in the
document was “the law of the land” which set it
in opposition to “the arbitrary will of the king.”
