One of the most important outcomes of the Rio+20 meetings will be a new way to envision cities—as contributors / assets/ part of the solution rather than part of the problem. Conference is ripe with innovative practices for producing ecosystem services, enhancing biodiversity, and connecting people to nature in cities. These innovations provide exciting opportunities for Role of scientists---My position at Cornell is 70% extension/outreach so I have written in my job to do this work. Originally started doing community engagement work bec part of my job---trace history of how what started as outreach has become part of academic, graduate mentoring, and undergraduate program, and attempts to influence policy/widespread change---in this way I hope to address goals of this invited session vis a vis exploring ideas re how the academic community can engage with local communities Three reasons---one sustainable, more rewarding, will be rewarded, our role as scholars—IMPORTANT TO THINK RE OUR ROLE Unusual positon.
