 TOPIC 7 Memories
   By Carly Seyferth
Key Concepts
• Memories can have an emotional impact on
  the lives of others
  – Give some examples
• Memories can influence the emotional
  choices and ideas of individuals
  – Give examples
Supportive Activity
• Where did most of your favorite memories occur?
   – Home?
   – Playground?
• What happened in this place that appeals to you?
   – Anything exciting, upbeat, happy?
• What did this place look like, how do you
remember it when these memories happened?
   – Draw them
• How have these memories influenced your
reactions to certain situations in this present time?
   – Would you react differently if your memory was more
     negative or positive?
Artist: Franco Magonani

How can an artist express his or her emotional and personal ties
to his or her home town through the use of art?
Franco Magonani
                            • born in the small Tuscan
                              Village of Pontito in 1934
                            • He paints his hometown
                            • Began to draw and paint
                              scenes from his childhood
                              after suffering a mysterious

Prima pittura, veduta della casa
        Magnani 1967
           • This is a picture of Franco’s
             home
           • He portrays the memory of his
             mother cooking the family meal
           • The feelings of home and love
are present here but the author
             is outside, reluctant to enter
           • That is because during this time
he painted it, his mother had
             already died.
WATERCOLOR TECHNIQUES
• We will be using watercolor for our final project.
• We will discuss the different techniques of water
  color
• I will do a class demonstration
• You will take that demonstration and make your
  own examples of each technique
• At least three techniques must be used in the final
  project
FINAL ACTIVITY
                   CONTINUED
• With the things you have learned about Franco you should pick one
of the places that you depicted in your supportive activity
• You must have something in the foreground, mid ground and
  background
• You must have at least three watercolor techniques
• You must have a written reflection
   – compare and contrast the composition of how you remembered
that place to the current picture of how it looks now
   – Include what memories you had there and how they shaped you
      as a person
   – Express what would of happened or how you would respond to
things differently if your memories were different
FINAL PROJECT AN
EXAMPLE FROM FRANCO
        • There is something in the
          background
        • There is something in the
          foreground
        • There is something in the
          mid ground
        • There is a sense of space
        • This piece is colorful

Editor's Notes

  1. This is a drawing of a walkway and a route that Franco traveled frequently. His friends lived in the big house at the center of this walkway.
  2. He painted this when he was severely sick and worried. The distortions and expressionistic style in this painting reflects his state of mind at the time. This is a painting of his house
