Global warming perspectives and solutions

  1. 1. Global Warming – perspectives and solutions
  2. 2. THE PRESENT CONDITION OF THE PLANET.THERE IS GROWING EVIDENCE THAT:• The party IS over – continued growth is NOT possible.• The reason for this is that a condition for continued growth is continued access to cheap fossil fuels. And much hard evidence is indicating, that we probably have reached «peak oil» at the same time as demands for oil keeps growing.• To understand what peak oil is: Watch this 3 minute animation:• http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHKp5vF_VoE&feature=related• It shows how addicted we are to oil – and that we HAVE TO get out of this addiction. Fast. Definitely within this century.• But it’s getting much worse when we look at the climatic consequenses of the burning of fossil fuels.• That’s what the rest of this slideshow is about

  4. 4. IT SEEMS THAT THE PERSPECTIVES ARE VERY DRAMATIC:Based on: Bill McKibben: «Global Warmings Terrifying New Math” (Article, RollingStone 19.07.12) Three simple numbers that add up to global catastrophe - and that make clear who the real enemy is (Mckibben is co-founder of http://350.org – “We’re building a global movement to solve the climate crisis.”)Read more:http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/global-warmings-terrifying-new-math-20120719#ixzz24CJ5In7v
  5. 5. IT SEEMS THAT THE PERSPECTIVES ARE VERYDRAMATIC:• Three simple numbers showing clearly where we stand: • First number: 2 degrees Celsius • Second number: 565 Gigaton • Third number: 2795 Gigaton
  6. 6. IT SEEMS THAT THE PERSPECTIVES ARE VERYDRAMATIC:2 degrees Celsius: The figure all politicians and scientists agree that we should not exceed, if we do not want the global warming to get out of control. «….. All told, 167 countries responsible for more than 87 percent of the worlds carbon emissions have signed on to the Copenhagen Accord, endorsing the two- degree target…….”
  7. 7. IT SEEMS THAT THE PERSPECTIVES ARE VERYDRAMATIC:565 Gigaton: Is the maximum amount of CO2 we can pour into the atmosphere and still hope to stay within the 2 degrees limit “…….Scientists estimate that humans can pour roughly 565 more gigatons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere by midcentury and still have some reasonable hope of staying below two degrees. ("Reasonable," in this case, means four chances in five, or somewhat worse odds than playing Russian roulette with a six-shooter.)……..”
  8. 8. IT SEEMS THAT THE PERSPECTIVES ARE VERYDRAMATIC:2795 Gigaton: If we burn all fossil fuel from known reserves we will pour 2795 Gigaton CO2 into the atmosphere…. ….”The number describes the amount of carbon already contained in the proven coal and oil and gas reserves of the fossil-fuel companies, and the countries (think Venezuela or Kuwait) that act like fossil-fuel companies. In short, its the fossil fuel were currently planning to burn. And the key point is that this new number – 2,795 – is higher than 565. Five times higher”……… (Bill McKibben)
  9. 9. EXACTLY HOW DANGEROUS IS THE PRESENTCONDITION OF THE PLANET:Click the youtube-link below to watch amovie that seems to give a very qualified– and quite alarming – answer to thatquestion:http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=pznsPkJy2x8#The source is «TED – Ideas worthspreading», a non-profitorganisation. Go to their website ifyou want to find out what they standfor.http://www.ted.com/

Insignificant or no action now is therefore not an option.
