Global warming poses a dire threat according to three key metrics: (1) scientists agree the temperature increase should not exceed 2 degrees Celsius; (2) we can only emit 565 more gigatons of carbon dioxide by 2050 to stay below 2 degrees; and (3) known fossil fuel reserves contain 2795 gigatons, over 5 times the safe amount. Significant action must be taken now through regulations and initiatives to transition away from fossil fuels, despite short-term costs, otherwise the consequences of global disaster including economic and societal collapse are all but guaranteed. Inaction is not a viable option.
