3. We commenced the year with an array of highly re-invigorated programmes and advocacy events
designed to create more awareness about AIDS, Tuberculosis & Malaria. These advocacy
programmesweretargetedathighleveldecisionmakers,stakeholders,civilsocietiesandotherNGO
groupsattheforefront-advocatingforsustainablehealthsolutionstoAfrica'shealthproblems.
On Thursday 21st February 2013 - Friends Africa hosted a panel session for non-profits at the Social Media Week;
aimed at providing detailed information and helping NGO's understand the power of social media for fundraising and
advocacy.ThisworldwideeventwasthefirstofitskindinAfricaandourrolebetterpositionedorganizationsespecially
non-profits to further connect and collaborate - most importantly they were able to learn best practices from
organizations in the diaspora, share ideas and other useful information. It taught them to effectively maximize the
power of social media. The Social Media week is a media community that has grown into more than 100,000
membersin26citiesacrosstheworld.

Friends Africa in April 2013 hosted the Executive Director of the Global Fund,
Mark Dybul during his 2 day visit to a series of high level events, targeted at
mobilizing Africa's viable sector towards increasing funding and ensuring
sustainability in the fight against AIDS, Tuberculosis & Malaria. The need to
transform Africa's health care system and build sustainable partnership with
several development partners, the private sector and key civil society groups
were some of the key focus of his visit. Friends Africa in partnership with selected
organizations scheduled a high level meeting with the President, His Excellency,
President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan who after expressing his appreciation
towards the Global Fund accepted that he will co-chair this year's Global Fund
replenishmenttoraisefundstofightAIDS,Tuberculosis&Malaria.
The Executive Director of the Global Fund, Mark Dybul also announced the
provision of US$288 million additional funding to help accelerate programmes
topreventandtreatHIVandMalariainNigeria.Thisnewfunding,accordingtoDr.
Dybul, is being made available under a new model, and Nigeria is one of 47
countries accessing new funding through renewals, grant extensions and
redesignedprogrammesinthisyear.

stakeholders Engagement Forum tagged: “Sustainable Health
Financing in Nigeria” which held at the NICON Hilton hotel Abuja. This
event convened civil society groups and major stakeholders and
addressed the need for increased local financing in the fight against

donors to top up the fund as there could be a double-digit decline in

Friends Africa scheduled a courtesy visit between the
Minister of Health, Prof. C.O Chukwu and Mark Dybul

7. Mark Dybul during his 2-day visit to Nigeria, hosted by Friends Africa, met with principal recipients of the Global Fund
inNigeriasuchasNationalAgencyforControlofAIDS(NACA)amongstothers.Thisforumservedasanopportunityto
discuss and measure the impact of the global fund in the fight against these diseases. At this meeting, the Executive
Director thanked each principal recipient for their efforts and stressed that these interventions are very vital to the
people assessing it, and the Global Fund is happy to be part of the success recorded in the fight against HIV/AIDS,
TuberculosisandMalaria.
Mark Dybul together with Friends Africa goodwill ambassador, Emmanuel
Babayaro and other leaders of the health sector visited Wuse General Hospital,
one of the 145 hospitals supported by Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN)
under the Global Fund Round 9 HIV grant, during his 2day visit hosted by the
organization. He was taken through several points of care for people living with
HIV such as the out-patient, laboratory, HIV counselling and testing, TB-DOT
centre,pharmacyandthePMTCTunits.
Emmanuel Babayaro on behalf of Friends Africa was present to guide this process
as well as joined other industry leaders to highlight the need for increased male
participation and involvement in prevention of mother-to-child transmission,
discordantcouplesaswellascontinuedfamilyplanning.
The site visit provided ample opportunity for recipients and sub-recipients of the
GlobalFund’sgranttoshareitsimpact andassessitspotentialforgrowth.

As part of her advocacy efforts to strengthen the African healthcare system; Friends Africa in collaboration with
Novartis, a Swiss multinational pharmaceutical company based in Switzerland convened global leaders from the
UnitedNations,MinistersofHealth,Governments,CivilSociety,andthePrivateSectoratanevententitled"Voicesfor
aHealthierAfrica:Leadership,Innovation&Scale”;asideeventatthe66thWorldHealthAssemblyinGeneva.
This event was attended by interested government delegations from Africa and the private sector creating the

Friends Africa wasrecently recognized and named by the Rockefeller Foundation amongst the World's Top 100 'Next
Century Innovator' for its innovative advocacy program “The Gift from Africa Campaign” developed to catalyze the
involvementoftheAfricanprivatesectorinthefightagainstthesepandemics.
While celebrating a century of giving, the Rockefeller Foundation recognized that communities worldwide faced
increasingly complex and interconnected challenges and its first step into a new century of philanthropy was to
recognizeandleverageonthetalentandenergyoftheworld'smostinnovativeorganization.
Friends Africa was celebrated for its innovativeness through this campaign that advocates and provides the

Friends Africa from January 28 – 30th attended the GFAN Global Strategy meeting designed to provide an
opportunity for civil society advocates to jointly develop a global and national action plan on strategies for resource

Friends Africa also attended a high level meeting convened by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation made up of selected
global health advocacy organizations to strategize on opportunities for supporting and mobilizing for global health.

Dr. Akudo Anyanwu Ikemba was recently awarded the 2013 Women's Social
Leadership Award under the category of Charitable Organizations and
Campaigns by Ogunte – a UK based international organization focused on
helpingwomenmakeapositiveimpactonpeopleandplanetbyenablingthemtolearn,leadandconnect.
She received this prestigious international award based on innovative and sustainable solutions developed to solve
andaddresspressingsocialissueswithresultofsocialimpactevident.
This award encourages and acknowledges women from across the globe for their extraordinary vision, responsible
businessandcampaigningpractices,andthecapacitytodevelopandengagewithothers.
Friends Africa on July 4th & 5th actively participated at the historic pre-consultations and Special Summit of the
African Union on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis & Malaria held at Rockview Hotel, Abuja. Joining esteemed civil society
groups like the Global Fund, ALMA, AIDS Health Care Foundation (AHF) amongst others across the continent; the
consultations were designed to translate the commitments and road maps designed by the African Heads of States in
2001 into reality. Friends Africa strongly advocated for increased domestic financing at this consultative session and
thiswasalsorecordedasapartofthekeyoutcomeoftheAbuja+12whichheldfromJuly15th-16th.

THIS YEAR’S GLOBAL FUND REPLENISHMENT AT THE ABUJA+12 SUMMIT
Friends Africa's board member Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Finance Minister of Nigeria joins the Global Fund and
health advocates from across the globe such as Charlize Theron, Bill Gates, Mark Dybul and others to call on world
leaders to be the generation to defeat AIDS, TB & Malaria. Sharing her personal experience about this life
threatening disease, she states the importance of increased funding, reiterating that achieving zero level rest on
each individual. She calls on international donors, heads of governments, the private sector and others to reinforce
their commitment and
seize the opportunity to invest in a worthy cause-bringing the fight to Zero.
We are indeed so close to bringing this pandemic to an end so we could save more lives, prevent more infections
and ultimately win the fight by recommitting and reinvesting our resources to the Global Fund in its 2014-2016
replenishment efforts.

Friends Africa’s founder and CEO, Dr Akudo Anyanwu Ikemba was
awarded with the “2013 Public Health Innovator Award” by the Harvard
School of Public Health during its Alumni Centennial Dinner in Boston
U.S.AonNovember2nd,2013.
The award which recognizes a significant innovative contribution to
public health made by a distinguished graduate of the Harvard School of Public Health was bestowed on her in
recognition of diverse innovative approach designed to address the issue of health in Africa. Some of these
innovations include the African Champions for Health initiative which has raised $31million from African
governments to support the fight against AIDS, TB & Malaria on the continent; the “Gift from Africa” campaign, an
initiative that engages an under-utilized African Private sector to invest in the fight against Africa's three deadliest
pandemics has so far leveraged $5 million to support the Global Fund in the fight against AIDS, TB & Malaria. Friends
Africa through its technical assistance programme secured over $600,000 for African countries in the Global Fund's
round 8 & 9 grants and conducted several regional and international grass root capacity building trainings on
workplace health policy for Small & Medium Enterprises (SME) to over 2700 participants and 250 NGOs amongst
severalothers.
This prestigious award recognizes innovative ideas or approach to public health delivery, via science, practice, or
educationinpublichealth.

17. FRIENDS AFRICA’S WORLD AIDS DAY AWARDS NIGHT & DINNER
To commemorate World AIDS Day, Friends Africa presented awards to outstanding private sector leaders and
organizations that have tirelessly supported and addressed the issue of HIV/AIDS in Nigeria at a special dinner
organized on Friday, November 29th. The award recipients were selected based on their outstanding commitment
and contributions to various initiatives targeted at addressing stigma and discrimination of people living with
HIVAIDS.
Over 20 Friends Africa volunteers set the ball rolling by going into neighboring communities, offices and markets to
mobilizeandencouragethemtogettested.
A total of 3,251 people were successfully tested during the weeklong campaign and through dissemination of flyers,
IEC materials, sensitization programs in local languages; more information and awareness was created around
HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care. Our technical partners were; Lagos State AIDS Control Agency (LSACA),
Federal Ministry of Health, Federal Ministry of Finance, Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS ( NEPWHAN),
EquitableHealthAccessInitiative(EHAI),SocietyforFamilyHealth(SFH).

CAMPAIGN – THE 'SUPERSTARS PLAY FOR LIFE' NOVELTY FOOTBALL MATCH
Friends Africa on Saturday, 30th November, held the second edition of its World AIDS Day anti-stigma and
discrimination campaign targeted at over 2million people. This year long campaign leverages the convening power of
sports to advocate against the stigma and discrimination of people living with HIV/AIDS and create a platform to
educate and empower people with useful information to help prevent new infections as well as increase access to
voluntarycounselling,testingandcare.
The campaign brought together over 2500 spectators from all walks of life and a significant number from the
community of people living with HIV/AIDS to witness the selfless display of renowned football players and Nigeria's
entertainmentindustryplayingagainsteachothertodrawattentiontotheissue.
A total number of 3,251 people were tested and the event brought together an array of people, captains of industries,
Grass Root NGOs and Stakeholders together ''Getting to Zero”. This campaign will continue via online discussions,
advertisements and other platforms to consistently engage the public and continue to create awareness about
HIV/AIDS.

WASHINGTON D.C TO AMPLIFY THE VOICES OF LEADING HEALTH ADVOCATES
AT THE GLOBAL FUND'S 2013 REPLENISHMENT.
Friends Africa in a very crucial response towards meeting the
Global Fund's replenishment target of $15b, amplified the voices
of leading advocates in the fight for an African continent free of
HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria through a high level panel discussion
themed “Going the Whole Nine Yards… What is needed for an
AfricanContinentfreeofAIDS,TB&Malaria”.
The high level event which held at the Woodrow Wilson Centre
was co-moderated by Dr Akudo Anyanwu Ikemba, CEO, Friends
Africa and Steve McDonald, Senior Advisor, Africa Program and
Project on Leadership and Building State Capacity of the Wilson
International Centre for Scholars. The event which hosted
distinguished speakers such as the First Lady of Rwanda, Madame
Jeannette Kagame, Nigeria's Finance Minister and Friends Africa
board member, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and the Director of the
Global Fund, Dr Mark Dybul to an insightful discuss on the benefits
and effectiveness that have accrued to Africa since the fund was
established and the continuing need to have a fully funded global
fund. The event which was very crucial in garnering support
towards meeting the replenishment target of $15 million USD was
well attended by delegates and representatives of executives and
officialsfromorganizationsaroundtheworld.

The breakfast meeting highlighted the importance of sustaining the efforts of the global fund in addressing health
