3. DISCOVERY ANALYSIS PROTOTYPING & TESTING
People who are shy, or socially anxious have a difficult
time meeting and connecting with people at social events.
Socially shy people are currently lacking a digital resource
to create a comfortable environment where they can
confidently meet and socialize with other people.

SURVEY USER INTERVIEWS
The purpose of the online survey was to validate my hypothesis that people who are shy, or
socially anxious have a difficult time meeting people and creating new friendships. I targeted
group pages on Facebook, where members consist of people who considered themselves
introverts. One of the groups was called “Social Introverts”. I also posted the survey on the
news feed of one of my main competitor, an app called Anomo.
The survey was simple, and it examined the person’s social life and how they feel about it.
At the end of the survey, I asked an open ended question, which I asked the participant to
describe a time when they felt uncomfortable in a social situation?
Results:
“I always had anxiety in social situations involving with a
large groups of people or even with one on one situation,
but over time I become used to one on one situations.”
“I want to be in the company of people
who know me and that can understand me,
especially after a feel drinks.”
“I don’t really like small talk, I rather have a real
conversation with people and I feel like when I go out
people based on superficial reasons to talk to you.”
“I really don’t like it that I’m analyzing why people
are not talking to me, or are talking to me. If I go out,
I would have to be intoxicated or under the influence.”
“People who are open minded and
feel comfortable talking to them. I
wouldn’t have to worry about being
lectured or criticized.”
“I do like to meet more people. Although I
have a lot of personal stuff I have to deal
with like my work. I wouldn’t mind to have
more friends. I’ve motivated to be someone
that people can depend on.”
6. DISCOVERY ANALYSIS PROTOTYPING TESTING
Based on the data I collected from the user interviews and online survey,
there were 6 major factors to successful social interactions:
Conversations
Dislike small talks.
Prefers a conversation with purpose.
Energy
Can only be out and about for a certain
amount of time before they get tired.
Confidence
Having a feeling of being judged, creating
anxiety during social situations.
Number of people
The more people in a social setting,
the faster they get tired.
Empathy
Feeling misunderstood for being socially
shy. Its difficult to feel connected.
Connection
Not feeling connected
with the other person.

Serena Michaels
“I felt shy, I felt uncomfortable. What was I doing there? Do I belong there at all? Its like the
people know what they are doing, but you have no clue what you are doing.”
Serena just moved to Seattle, Washington. She works in
an ad agency as an illustrator.
Most of her close friends are either out-of-state, or too
busy with their own life. So she usually goes out by her-
self. She also likes taking photographs and visiting art
galleries.
Her husband is an extrovert who has a lot more friends
than she does. When they go out to a party or a social
event, they’re usually hanging out with her husband’s
group of friends.

esteem, he tend to talk stick to himself and spend a lot of time
on his phone, just so he can avoid social interactions.

27. DISCOVERY ANALYSIS PROTOTYPING TESTING
Based on the usability testing for the Hi-Fi Prototype, the
majority of the participant commented on concept of the
Hidden and Public Profile. Most of the participants didn’t
think it was necessary for a networking situation. Some say
the feature provides a sense of safety.
The next steps: improve the On-boarding process to better
educate the users of the purpose of the Profile feature and
simplify the prototype by removing the features that were
ignored and making key task more efficient.
