Indonesia is home to the 4th largest mobile market in the world, boasting a huge mobile subscriber base of more than 278 million.
Even as one of the biggest markets in the mobile industry in Asia, its mobile story has remarkable similarities to that of other emerging markets in Africa, primarily because of the "leapfrog effect" that mobile has ushered in due to its geographically challenging landscape and the expensive costs involved in laying down traditional copper telephone lines (just 9 million fixed lines). These underlying factors, regardless of it being out of pure necessity or to justify investment in the industry, have helped paved the way for mobile to thrive! Mobile penetration in Indonesia stands at a whopping 122% as of early 2014 and has no signs of slowing down with the rate expected to jump up to 130% and 330 million subscribers in 2015.

Mobile massive
When one thinks of Indonesia scenes of bustling mega cities, tourist-laden islands and pristine
beaches come to vividly to mind! You'd be forgiven for thinking that this immensely popular holiday
destination in Southeast Asia is nothing other than that, but for those in the mobile industry it
represents so much more than a mere getaway. Indonesia is home to the 4th largest mobile market
in the world, boasting a huge mobile subscriber base of more than 278 million.
Even as one of the biggest markets in the mobile industry in Asia, its mobile story has remarkable
similarities to that of other emerging markets in Africa, primarily because of the "leapfrog effect" that
mobile has ushered in due to its geographically challenging landscape and the expensive costs
involved in laying down traditional copper telephone lines (just 9 million fixed lines). These underlying
factors, regardless of it being out of pure necessity or to justify investment in the industry, have helped
paved the way for mobile to thrive! Mobile penetration in Indonesia stands at a whopping 122% as of
early 2014 and has no signs of slowing down with the rate expected to jump up to 130% and 330 million
subscribers in 2015.
Join us as we take a look a brief look at Indonesia's operators, trends in the industry and what they can
do to get the most out of its Mobile Mad population!
The way forward for the 'BIG' 3
The mobile industry in Indonesia is extremely competitive with a grand total of 8 mobile operators vying
for customer subscriptions, but the industry is dominated by only 3. Telkomsel (123m), Indosat (55m)
and XLAxiata (42m) collectively make up 80% of the industry's market share and with mobile
penetration as high as it is, growing the mobile data market is taking precedence over all else.
2. The rising popularity of OTT players such as WhatsApp, Line and WeChat as well as smartphone
uptake in in the region has promoted a surge in data use that has Telkomsel, number 1 of the 'BIG' 3,
pledging some big investment. Having committed approximately IDR 12 trillion (USD 1.3 billion) of
capital expenditure to network enhancements, Telkomsel is adamant about improving its existing 3G
mobile broadband network and also its legacy 2G network. This invesment is set to accommodate for
the growing number of smartphone users and the many feature phone users still active in Indonesia.
Where feature phone and smartphone collide
With the growing number of urbanized, affluent Indonesians driving smartphone sales (24%
penetration) and the up surge in use of data services, the continued investment in 3G networks by
operators in the region is prevalent across the board. However, the interesting thing to note is that
feature phones still represent a huge market in the country. A consensus forecast notes that there are
currently 180m active feature phones in Indonesia, and by 2015 there will still be 140m feature phone
users. A lot of the feature phones available today can access the internet and even run the instant
messaging apps that have become the new way to communicate!
How can Operators get the most out of the market?
Operators in Indonesia stand to make the most out of the smartphone market in the coming years.
Those looking to ride the mobile data wave need to look at leveraging low cost devices that support
the most popular OTT apps on the market. These entry-level devices offer the advanced features that
one sees on a smartphone, but at the price of a feature phone. They offer simple functionality with
even more useful applications and additional data services that make them ideal as an upgrade from a
feature phone, perfect for the end user and more so for the operators that offer them!
