This presentation revolves around vocabulary development for the English Language Learner. In a mathematical vocabulary lesson designed for 5th grade students, this presentation will highlight different ways to review vocabulary, ideas for assessments, and specific mathematical vocabulary terminology.
2. 5TH GRADE MATHEMATICS –
DIVIDING FRACTIONS
Content Standard
• 5.NF.B Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to
multiply and divide fractions.
3. 5TH GRADE MATHEMATICS –
DIVIDING FRACTIONS
• In this 5th grade mathematics lesson, students will be exposed for the first time to
the process of dividing fractions. First students will be given a problem to try
independently on their whiteboards. After the opening activity, the teacher will give
a 20 minute instructional lesson about the process that is used to multiple fractions
using key vocabulary to explain the process. Next, students will be engage in a class
learning activity using white boards and dry erase markers. Finally, students will
work independently on practice problems after completing a series of problems in
class with 80% accuracy. Students will complete workbook page 65 for homework.
4. DIVIDING FRACTIONS – LESSON
VOCABULARY
1) Numerator
2) Denominator
3) Factor
4) Least Common Multiple
5) Common Multiple
6) Cross Cancellation
7) Cross Multiply
8) Reciprocal

5. REVIEWING LESSON VOCABULARY
• Math Notes
• Students receive a note template at the beginning of class. As
vocabulary is introduced, students record the vocab word and
definition.
• Pop Quiz
• Randomly choose a time throughout the lesson to give students a pop
quiz regarding the vocabulary. Students who answer all questions
correctly receive a small piece of candy.
• Math Jeopardy
• In an online jeopardy format, include a blend of mathematical
problems and mathematical vocabulary terms for students to answer
in a fun filled, review competition.
6. FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
1) The actual operation used to find the answer to a division
problem when dividing fractions
2) The bottom number of a fraction
3) When a fraction cannot become any smaller
4) Means that when multiplying fractions you can reduce the
numerator of one fraction with the denominator of another
5) A number into which each number in a given set may be evenly
divided
6) To clear an equation of fractions when each side consists of a
fraction with a single denominator by multiplying the numerator
of each side by the denominator of the other side and equating
the two products obtained
7) A number that when multiplied by a given number gives one as a
product
