Non-verbal communication examples include sign language and gestures. The challenges of communicating effectively in groups are also examined through an example newspaper tower building activity. Guidelines for effective discussion are outlined, including setting an agenda, establishing ground rules, and using techniques like the Soler theory of active listening. The importance of preparing for debates by developing opening/closing statements and questions is emphasized.

2. Verbal Communication
Verbal communication is everything to do with speech,
sound and words.

as deafness and other types of hearing problems
Is commonly used on daytime TV when a person appears at
the bottom of the screen to use sign language
Also things such as thumbs up to people is a type of non
verbal communication
4. The Newspaper Challenge
During the newspaper challenge we were instructed to create
a tower completely out of newspapers in 15 minutes. Before
the challenge we were given 5 minutes to plan what our
tactic to build the tower would be, then after that we had to
build it in complete silence.
5. How It Went
When we started building the tower everything was going
well at the start until we started to rush things and were also
running out of paper. In the end our tower collapsed and we
ended up with a 1 foot tower.
6. Why it was difficult
The reason it was difficult was because we had to do the
challenge in silence and we had limited recourses when
building the tower.
7. Good Group Communication Skills
Communicating vocally is a very useful skill that can change
between situations. It is also important that a speaker asses
the situation they are in and judge what the best way to
address their audience verbally.
8. Consequences of poor communication skills
Some examples of consequences of poor communication
skills are..
Lower efficiency
employee morale
Decreased innovation
9. Discussion Guide:
Environment
It is very important that the environment for the discussion is
suitable to certain peoples standards, otherwise making the
environment too informal might make the discussion not taken
seriously.
Supporting Resources
Having supporting resources in the discussion would make those
involved feel prepared for what certain topics may arise. Also it
could then get more people involved in the discussion, then
meaning more informed opinions.
10. Discussion Ground Rules Resources:
Agenda
It is required to insure that the topic provided has a clear topic
and make sure that everyone is aware of what the certain topic
is about.
Time
There should be enough time provided within the discussion to
ensure all necessary points are covered. Also it is recommended
that not too much time is spent on the agenda, as this would
then more likely be not enough time when discussing necessary
points.
11. Discussion Ground Rules:
When discussing ground rules it is important that everyone involved in the discussion agrees with each rule before making it an official one. This would
then more likely prevent people becoming upset with others behavior. Some examples of the rules are..
Working as a team
Follow instructions
Be respectful of others
Don’t argue or become enemy's
Stick together
Honor time limits
Participate fully
Turn walkie talkies off
Always share when eating or drinking
Be open to new ideas
12. Interacting with others: The Soler theory
The soler theory was created by a man named Egan
Is a non verbal listening method that is used commonly in
communication
Soler stands for face squarely, open posture, lean, eye
contact and relaxed
The soler theory is believed to help a person feel more
involved in types of communication
13. Social Media Group Debate
1. You must decide upon an opening statement. This
should state your opinion, position and the arguments you
will be proposing.
E.g. Censorship is wrong because everyone has the right to
free speech.
Openning statement: social media is wrong because there
are lots of cyber bullying that can occur that can hurt a
person inside.
14. Questioning Your Opponent
2. You should have at least 10 questions that can be asked of your opponent.
These should be on separate sheets of paper or on note cards for easy reference.
The questions should be specifically directed to your opponent and should be
concise and clear.
1. do you agree that bullying occurs on social media?
2. If social media is good then why do things such as bullying still occur?
3. How would you prevent bullying from happening on social media?
4.
15. Answering Debate Questions
3. You should have answers prepared which will be used to respond to your
opponent’s questions. Imagine that you are from the other team and determine
what questions may be asked of your team.
16. Conclusion
4. You should have a final conclusive argument/statement drawn
up which will be proposed at the end of your debate.
When you have determined who will be responsible for each
portion of your team's debate, it is up to you to prepare yourself for
the challenge that lies ahead. Only one team will win this debate.
The winning team will: Have a solid background regarding all
material. Have plenty of evidence to back up claims. Be
creative/psyche out opponents. Outclass opponents/never give an
answer of "uh...."
