8. CRFM’S PELAGIC WORKING GROUP (PWG) 2014
Literature review of FAD fisheries statistical management
across CRFM Member States
Considered findings & recommendations.
Considered options for start up of FAD fisher log book system
(start with few fishers, start with basic data)
9. CRFM PWG - KEY FINDINGS & CONCLUSIONS
Logbook active fisher participation in data collection
integral part of participatory approach
St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Grenada reported
that they have engaged a few fishers for catch/ effort
data recording, & St. Lucia is to initiate such
participation.
Need for efficient awareness building among fishers
before implementation
Proposed that countries select a small group of fishers
(in the initial stages) to work with the logbooks, then
expand.
Data collection form being kept simple for maximum
cooperation & cost-effective for printing.
10. CRFM PWG – THE LOG BOOK RECOMMENDATION
A draft fisher logsheet – CARIFICO Project Directors’ meeting (October 2014)
Based on the recommendations from the Directors’ meeting and other
suggestions received, a second draft was developed that considered:
Literacy levels of fishers - minimize required writing; identify species
graphically
Need for countries to customize specific fields accordingly (e.g. landing site,
fishing area/FAD location, gear type)
Inclusion of section for fisher financial record-keeping – fisher to keep copy of
records submitted to Fisheries Department
Transparency and accountability in administrative record-keeping – issuance
of logbooks
