  1. Information Session Academy of Allied Health & Science
  2. Agenda and objectives a. If you turn your attention to your agenda you’ll see that this morning is intended to help you meet three objectives. We have several different speakers today, each with a unique perspective on the district, the Career Academies and the field of Biotechnology. Between all of us, it is our goal to be sure you leave today, better able to decide 1. If a career academy is right for you, 2. If Biotechnology HS in particular, is where you want to be for the next four years 3. How the application and selection process works. b. Before we get started, few housekeeping details for today’s program. Be sure that you have registered and picked up an application before you leave here today. Attending an information session is a requirement for successful application and information sessions are the only place you can get an application. Applications are color coded by Academy. You can attend as many information sessions as you would like. You must, however, attend an information session at the Academy to which you intend to apply and pick up an application there. c. There will be time for a Q&A session at the end of the evening so if there is something we haven’t addressed, you will have a chance to ask. Transition 1: At this point I would like to turn the mike over to our first speaker, Mr.. Tim McCorkell, Asst. Superintendent of the MCVSD. He will be giving you an overview of the MCVSD district, an introduction to the Career Academy initiative, and some background on the Biotechnology High School. Please welcome Mr. Tim McCorkell. Transition 2: Thank you Mr. McCorkell. I said that your first objective tonight is to decide if a career academy is right for you or if another type of educational setting would suit you better. Mr. McCorkell gave you some information to help you make that decision. Giving you additional information and a very different and perspective on that question is Amanda Dwyer. She is currently a Senior at CHS and not long ago, she was in the same place you are: trying to decide if a Career Academy was for her. Obviously she decided yes, but she will share her thinking with you and how she feels about her decision. Please give a warm welcome to Amanada. Transition 3: Thank you Amanada for providing those insights. As we’ve said, Monmouth County Vocational School District has 4 exisiting Career Academy’s. Biotechnology HS will be the 5 th. . If you decide a Career Academy is right for you you need to choose the Academy that is the best fit for your interests and talents. That will be vital to your success. Our next speaker is Dr. Michael Palladino, an Associate Professor of Biology at Monmouth University, and author of the Text book, An Introduction to Biotechnology. He is a member of the BTHS Advisory Board, which met for the first time in early October. It is an indication of the strength of NJIT’s support for BTHS that David has been out for us twice already this fall and we haven’t even opened our doors yet. He is here to put the Biotechnology HS in context for you. He will define biotechnology, examine some of its applications, and highlight some of the career opportunities that are open in this rapidly growing field. Take this opportunity to welcome, Michael Palladino. Transition 4: Thank you again Michael. I’ve entitled my part, Biotechnology HS, The Nuts and Bolts. I plan to talk more about the curriculum that will be specific to BTHS and about the application process.

  4. While the concept of a Communications High School is new to Monmouth County the idea of a Career Academy started back in the early 1980’s. The Communications High School will be the fourth Academy opened by the Monmouth County Vocational School District. The first school opened by MCVSD is The Marine Academy of Science & Technology. Students entering this school are interested in the marine sciences and technology. They are one of the most unique schools in the county garnering awards of New American High School, Blue Ribbon School and New Jersey Star School. The second school opened in 1991 by MCVSD is The High Technology High School located in Lincroft. The High Technology High School focuses its attention on students that are interested in entering into engineering, math and science careers. In its tenth year of operation, the High Technology High School has placed itself amongst the best high schools in New Jersey with awards ranging from New Jersey Best Practices to a Blue Ribbon School. The third academy named The Academy of Allied Health and Science located in Neptune opened its doors in 1996. This school provides a unique learning environment for students interested in pursuing a career in the medical profession. They just recently won a National Service Learning Award for their volunteerism throughout Monmouth County. The Communications High School opened our doors for our second year of operation to students interested in communications in September 2000. Biotech 2005

  6. Information Session Academy of Allied Health & Science Theme is key Interest must be there Also “higher education” and “workplace” = College and Career
  7. Information Session Academy of Allied Health & Science a. Who comes to the academies ; i. Students come from all over the county, over 50 sending districts ii. Students come for a variety of reasons iii. The most successful students come because the are excited about the theme of the school iv. Career Academies admit approx. 75-80 students into their freshman classes v. As full four year high schools they have approx, 280 students b . Career Academies are different i. We are a school of choice. That creates a different mind set for students and for staff. ii. We are small learning communities and we don’t let you get lost (even if you want to). iii. 40 credits per year, 160 credits to graduate. The state only requires 120 credits. You are getting a lot of education with us. iv. We don’t rank our students. We have found it hurts student to impose a bell curve over a small select group. v. All courses are academically rigorous taught at what would be considered at least an Honors level at a regular high school vi. Thematic focus supported by unique courses, thematic integration across the curriculum, and partnerships vii. Close partner ships with industry and higher education help ensure that the education we provide remains relevant to your long term educational and career goals. viii. Partners provide guest speakers, sites for field based experiences, research advisors, and opportunities to earn college credits, etc. ix. All the academies teach on some variation of the block schedule, meaning that class periods are longer but may meet for only half the year or every other day.
  8. Information Session Academy of Allied Health & Science Career Academies share some things in common with full four-year high schools i. We are still a high school serving the educational needs of teenagers. We recognize that not all of the educational needs of teenagers are academic. 1. Offer Wide array of clubs 2. Students engage in Service activities 3. Host a number of Social events through out the course of the year
