Capture
One of the primary practices recommended by Allen (2015) is the importance of having a regular emptying of our minds into some type of capture system. Instead of attempting to recall each outstanding task in our minds, we record those actions in our trusted system.
Because we know that we will have an opportunity to evaluate each item that we capture at designated times, we trust that items that are captured will be reliably addressed. We mistrust our brains to remember all the potential actions that will come our way daily.
The goal is to use the brain for more important functions than trying to remember things. The discipline of capturing frees up the mind for embarking on more creative pursuits.
As an example, a professional triggers list for an online instructor could include:
Class Planning
Upcoming Synchronous / Scheduled Class Meetings
Grading
Professional Development
Research
Conferences
Upcoming Meetings
