This document provides a textual analysis of a media clip that represents young males in a negative way. The opening shots establish the urban setting and show an unconscious young man dressed sharply in a suit, representing power but also mystery. Throughout, lighting and shots conceal the main character's identity while reinforcing themes of violence, death, and pain. The only character present is this young male, shown dealing with an unknown past through flashbacks. Music and text style contribute to an unsettling tone. In the end, the character's identity is revealed but the clip continues portraying him negatively through its mysterious atmosphere and editing techniques.

Opening
The initial shot shows an out of focus tunnel that gradually focus’s into clarity. The opening establishing shot immediately
establishes the genre and the graffiti identifies the urban environment. The secondary crane shot quickly cuts to a low lighted
tracking POV mid shot that track towards a young male dressed in a suit who is unconscious on the floor. The suit immediately
presents powerful and strong representations of the young man, that contrast with the fact he is unconscious in an urban setting.
The suite has been used in a variety of Thriller films for years and contrast with the uniform/disguise costumes used by antagonists
in Horror films. The low lighting helps to establish the Horror/Thriller genre and introduces the theme of mystery that surrounds
the main character throughout the clip, the low lighting still keeps the antagonists identity a mystery, the low level lighting and
shot choices throughout the clip work together to keep the characters identity a secret. The lack of identity shown and the lighting
choices all represent the main character in a very negative way, representing the social group of young males in a negative way.
The mid shot of the main character with his back to the character is featured in black and white, this represents a flashback and
reinforces the dark themes of mystery and tension to the character, as his identity is still not released. The black/white contrast
with the ‘reality’ scenes and shows to the audience the change in time.
The establishing shot of the church presents extremely negative representations and works parallel with the lighting and editing
choices to reinforce the themes of death. The church suggests the main character is involved with death and pain. This is cemented
with over the shoulder shot of the butcher knife, the blood on the knife reinforces the violent and murderous themes of the clip
and establishes the character as the antagonist. The over the shoulder shot is used to again conceal his identity, that continues
with the mystery of the character. This again represents young males in a sadistic, negative way.
The low angle, tracking mid shot follows the character and presents to the audience he is pain. This works parallel with the themes
of violence and pain that reoccur throughout the clip. The audience questions his past, wanting to watch past the opening two
minutes of the film.
The absence of women or any other social groups in the clip puts full emphasis on the one character and the way he is
represented. The character is so heavily represented in a negative way that he is identified as the antagonist. The audience are
curious about the characters identity and want to watch on to discover his motives and past.
The non diegetic synchronous piano riff is looped throughout the clip. The riff is reversed and looped a final time to signify a
change In atmosphere. From that point on the editing and shot types become more mysterious and chilling. The music choice
juxtaposes with the mysterious themes of the clip and helps to create an eerie, chilling atmosphere to the clip. The sound is
accompanied by the dark red, bold font that helps to establish the Horror/Thriller genre. The font and sound help to represent
young males in a very negative way.
The long shot of the character walking down the path is accompanied by a variety of editing techniques. The use of cross fades and
jump cuts help to shorten the shot and shows the journey from the character. The long shot reveals the characters identity and it is
the first time the audience see him in full. The atmospheric editing adds to the theme of mystery and tension. The long shot and
editing techniques add to the mystery of the clip and are substantial in creating a negative representation of the main character.
