2. History and legend
GANESH CHATURTHI FESTIVAL ORIGINATED DURING THE REIGN OF THE MARATHAS. IT WAS CHATRAPATI
SHIVAJI WHO STARTED THE FESTIVAL AS A WAY OF BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER AND MAKING THEM MORE
PATRIOTIC. THERE IS A FASCINATING LEGEND ASSOCIATED WITH THE BIRTH OF GANESHA, WHO WAS THE
SON OF LORD SHIVA AND GODDESS PARVATI.
ACCORDING TO IT, IT WAS GODDESS PARVATI WHO CREATED GANESHA. ONE DAY, SHE WANTED TO HAVE A
BATH BUT AS LORD SHIVA HAD GONE OUT, SHE USED SOME TURMERIC PASTE TO CREATE GANESHA WHO SHE
INSTRUCTED TO KEEP WATCH OUTSIDE HER ROOM UNTIL SHE FINISHED HER BATH. WHILE SHE WAS BATHING,
LORD SHIVA ARRIVED BUT GANESHA DID NOT ALLOW HIM TO ENTER. THIS ENRAGED LORD SHIVA WHO
BEHEADED GANESHA.
WHEN PARVATI EMERGED FROM HER BATH AND REALIZED WHAT HAPPENED, SHE ASSUMED THE FORM OF
GODDESS KALI AND THREATENED THAT SHE WOULD DESTROY THE WORLD. EVERYONE WAS WORRIED AND
THEY MET LORD SHIVA TO FIND A SOLUTION AND CALM THE GODDESS’ RAGE. SHIVA ORDERED HIS
FOLLOWERS TO GO AND FIND A CHILD. THE FIRST CHILD THEY SAW WAS THAT OF AN ELEPHANT AND SO
THEY CUT ITS HEAD AND TOOK IT TO LORD SHIVA. LORD SHIVA AT ONCE PLACED THE HEAD ON GANESHA'S
BODY AND RESTORED IT TO LIFE AGAIN.
THE GODDESS’ RAGE SUBSIDED AND GODDESS PARVATI BECAME HAPPY AGAIN. ALL THE GODS GAVE THEIR
BLESSINGS TO GANESHA. SINCE THEN, THE DAY IS CELEBRATED AS GANESHA CHATURTHI.

3. Ganesh Chaturthi preparations begin almost a month before
the festival. The celebrations continue for around ten days.
A clay idol of Lord Ganesha is installed in homes on the first
day. People decorate their homes with flowers and make it a
point to visit temples.
Poojas will be performed and bhajans, sung. Entire families
often come together to celebrate the festival. In many
localities pandals will be erected and large idols of Lord
Ganesha will be installed. The day the festival ends, the idols
of Lord Ganesha will be taken in procession on the streets.
People display their enthusiasm and joy by singing and
dancing on the streets during the procession. Finally, the
idol is immersed in water bodies like the river or sea. This is
called Ganesh Visarjan.

4. Reason behind
Ganesh Visarjan
Ganesh Visarjan is done to represent the birth cycle of Lord Ganesha. Since he was
made from clay/earth, his symbolic statue is also made of it. The idol is immersed in
water to enable Ganesha to return to his home after ‘staying’ at the devotees’ home or
temple where the festival rituals are performed. The reason why people don’t keep the
statue for longer is that the power that pervades the statue after worshipping it for 10
days of worship is all we can bear.
As devotees feel that discarding or breaking the idol would not be respectful, the
statue is immersed in the water. This makes it break down into the clay from which it
was made. Some statues are prepared as such that its constituent materials actually
benefit the ecosystem they enter. Earlier, the Ganesha idols were made of non-
biodegradable materials which harmed the environment. Also, the use of poisonous
substances in the paints polluted the water bodies and posed a threat to humans and
the organisms living in the water bodies.
With increasing awareness of the cost to the environment and its negative impact,
people have started using bio-degradable materials for making the idols. Thus the
concept of an eco-friendly Ganesha Chaturthi celebration is the trend nowadays.

Pooja
FOR THE POOJA, A CLAY IDOL OF LORD GANESHA IS INSTALLED
IN THE DEVOTEE’S HOME. MANY DISHES ARE COOKED FOR
OFFERING (BHOG).
THE IDOL IS BATHED IN PURE WATER AND THEN FLOWERS ARE
USED TO DECORATE IT. A LAMP IS LIT AND THEN THE AARTI
BEGINS. BHAJANS ARE SUNG AND MANTRAS CHANTED. PEOPLE
BELIEVE THAT CHANTING THE MANTRAS WITH FULL DEVOTION
BRINGS LIFE TO THE IDOL.
THEY ALSO BELIEVE THAT DURING THIS TIME, GANESHA VISITS
THEIR HOME, BRINGING GOOD FORTUNE AND PROSPERITY.
HENCE, THE DAY IS REGARDED AS VERY AUSPICIOUS.
6. Many kinds of sweets are offered to Lord Ganesha during the pooja. Of all these, Modak is a great
favorite of the Lord. Thus, it is the main dish prepared on this day. Other dishes include laddoos,
barfi and pedhas.
It has to come from you.
