2. the Indian pulp and paper industry
• Ranks at no. 15 in the world
• consumption at around 9.1 million tonnes/yr
• Highly fragmented
• 600 separate production units with capacities
ranging from 5 tonnes/day to 1,000
tonnes/day.
• 28 mills based on wood fiber, 200 agro-based,
(bagasse and straw) and 360 on recovered
paper
3. Major players in india
• ITC
• TNPL
• JK
• BILT
• SESHAYEE
• WEST COST
4. TNPL
• production capacity – 4,00,000 tonnes
• Largest bagasse based Paper Mill in the world.
• consumes more than 1 million tones of
bagasse every year.
• Environmental Strategy of the Year Award
• Sales turn over - 1,184.45
5. • FSC certification by the Smart Wood
Programme of the Rain Forest Alliance, USA
• Permission to use the Panda Logo on some
TNPL brands from WWF’s Indian division
• Cost of note - Rs - 30
6. Itc classmates
• Unit of itc
• Sales over 2000 crores
• 4 units at Badrachalam, Kovai , Tribeni etc.
• Cost of note – RS 35
7. JK
• Headquarters: New Delhi
• Branch location: New Delhi, Mumbai,
Kolkata, Chennai
• No. of employees: close to 300 employees
• Turnover: RS. 1300 Cr
• Growth rate: 10%
9. Parameters
• Raw material efficiency
• Clean Technology
• Energy
• Effluent management
• Forestry
10. Raw materials
• Tnpl – 80 % bagasse based and 20 % wood
pulp . Few products are 100 % baggasse based
• 55 kL water / MT
BILT - 2,88,293 hectares of forest timber
available for bilt. 70% of wood is from FSC
controlled forestry. Most of the procurement
is from its own plantation in malaysia and
from farm forestry in India.
11. ITC
– ITC uses raw materials like Waste papers and
Pulps, Hardwood and mesta, bamboo, lime burnt
and rosins.
– 50 KL / MT
JK
– JK papers uses Hard wood, Pulp and Bamboo as it
raw materials for production.
13. Technology
TNPL
• process of implementing a 600 tpd Cement plant for
converting mill wastes namely lime and fly ash to
cement
• Pulp expansion - bagasse and deinking
• Bio-methanation plant for generation of methane gas
from bagasse wash water subsequently augmented
14. • ♦ “Energy Efficiency Improvement in Chemical
Recovery boiler.
• • Projects under Validation:
• ♦ 13.75 MW – Grid connected wind electricity
generation project at Devarkulam by TNPL.
• • Project under Planning:
• ♦ Installation of Energy Efficient Boiler for
Higher Steam and Power Generation.
15. ITC
• India’s first company to adopt chlorine free
technology and upgraded to light ECF with ozone
treatment.
• Its manufacturing unit in bhadrachalam was rated
the “greenest unit” with 46% while the industry
average was only 29%.
JK
• ECF bleaching not yet adopted

17. ITC - energy
• ITC is 98% self sufficient through co-
generation of energy from bio-mass waste
from wood pulp plantations.
• ITC has been 'carbon positive' four years in a
row sequestering /storing twice the amount of
CO2 that the company emits.
• ITC ventured into wind energy generation
with 14 MW capacity and solar heaters.
18. TNPL
• 35 MW OF Green energy
• 20 MW of bio energy produced
BILT
• Only 9% of the energy used is from bio mass and
remaining conventional energy is still used.
• But many energy saving measures are being
taken.
JK
• Only conventional energy is mostly used.
20. Effluents
TNPL
– TNPL Effluent Water Lift Irrigation Society(TEWLIS)
"Activated Sludge Process".
– Around 1700 acres of arid land are irrigated with the treated effluent
water under TEWLIS scheme.
ITC
– ITC has been 'Water Positive' for seven years in a row - creating two
times more Rainwater Harvesting Potential than ITC's net
consumption.
– ZERO SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT – fly ash, chipper dust, and plastic
100%recycled.
21. Bilt
– Bilt’s plant bhigwan mill is certifies zero waste water discharge mill.
– At Bhigwan, an extensive effluent treatment plant to 88% percent of
treated effluent.
– Participatory Water Management - Water User Association (WUA) and
Water User Group (WUG)
JK
– Activated sludge treatment process used. Lime kiln plant to regenerate
line from lime sludge.
– Minimization of water consumption in different process through reuse
and minimize waste water discharge upto 17%
